Meet Clizzy Houston of 45 Secrets/Brick Wall in Downtown L.A.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clizzy Houston.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came up deeply rooted in the church, mainly southern baptist so my grassroots in music is a combination of gospel and r&b. I wasn’t introduced to hip hop until the early 90’s right when the Kris Kross era chimed in. Not quite the typical hip hop/rap starter kit but it is my truth. It was then where I indulged in other facets of hip hop from gangster to conscious rap, all the way to crossover pop versions of the culture. I studied underground to mainstream artists and found a passion for contributing to the art. I noticed that I was in sync with all rhythms of life and couldn’t help but create melodies to every sound pattern my ears absorbed. I’m a poet by nature and sort of shied away from song structure because it wasn’t as boundless as my original writing style. However, the creative process fascinated me and I began listening and writing to several genres of music. Around 2014 is when I traveled west and started physically networking in the Hollywood/L.A. areas. Throughout the years, I’ve built relationships that have allowed me to share the same space with my childhood and adult influences in this music industry and continue to build with my team at Brick Wall. The rest is just history to be made…

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If I told you this journey of mine was a cakewalk, you probably wouldn’t believe me because what is? I’ve tried shortcuts, indulged in pipe dreams, you name it, I tried it. My Mom and Dad really showed me what it was like to roll up your sleeves and take the high road which is always the least traveled and most challenging. I’ve had tour runs and magazine articles, management, and merchandise which resulted in things falling by the waist side by not involving myself as thoroughly as I should have. I was under the misconception that songwriting was all that needed my 2 cents and let the “business people” handle the rest…. boy was I all the way WRONG!!! I had to learn different elements of the business of music and myself as a product. Trust and believe, the bounceback is definitely real. Shout out to 45 Secrets, Brick Wall, M. Pemberton Designs, 829 Group, and PenFOLQ for building this dream with me.

Please tell us about 45 Secrets/Brick Wall.
Well, in a nutshell, we are a privately owned commercial recording studio and production company with reps from L.A. to Atlanta. We offer education, community, and career development for both the novice and established artists alike. Our goal is to provide knowledgeable resources for artists to excel as professional creators in a continuously evolving entertainment environment.

We specialize in branding and presentation. In an industry where artist development is almost obsolete, we pride ourselves in having the veteran experience and tools to build artist repertoire and establish good rapport via relationships. We love what we do and we believe our drive is unmatched in the independent record industry from that standpoint alone and we strive to be the best to ever do it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start this entire experience over, I would definitely just stick to the plan. Stick to the script and vow to never flip it! When you have great ideas and the vision to execute, it’s your duty to at least see it all the way to the top or head-on with the Brick Wall (no pun intended). Life is an experiment within itself so altering your attempts at something due to other’s opinion on it usually result in a major halt in your movements and slow-motion turns into stagnant complacency. I would definitely just DO ME, take my time, and TRUST the process!! Slow movement always outweighs no movement.
