Meet Clementina Eley and Diane Parent of Orange Clementine in La Habra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clementina Eley and Diane Parent.

Orange Clementine blossomed from a strong desire to build a California brand of foodie gifts that sings with amazing citrus notes – but also made from scratch with California citrus, that are delicious, and represent California’s citrus history. We started with meetings in cars in parking lots chatting over coffee, then progressed through the nuts and bolts of building a business. After starting out at a shared kitchen, we converted a warehouse space into our own commercial permitted kitchen. We were able to build it economically because we did all the drafting ourselves, and we had help from people, like our contractor, who wanted to help us out in starting our business.

Our first sales were at our local farmer’s market and soon we were selling at seven farmer’s markets every weekend. Diane and Clementina would pack up the van full of cakes and cookies and drive all over California to get eyes on our products and business.

“Amazing” is the most used word once people tasted our cake samples. That validation and inspiration kept us going during those lean first years. We’ve been in business for five years and are excitedly planning the next five! While hustling to build our client base, we were also building our online store. When we developed our recipes, we focused on products that were easy to pack beautifully and ship. We’ve shipped to the U.K., Ireland, and all over the United States including Alaska and Hawaii! People say they like to send a little California sunshine to their friends and family who don’t get to live in California!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Baking from scratch and doing everything by hand makes costs go up, of course, so finding ways of doing things more efficiently while keeping the quality high is a challenge but our first priority. Like many home-grown businesses we have to make every penny work for us and funding the start of the business ourselves meant that we had to put in many long hours of production followed by more hours working at events and markets. While we still chirped with delight when the cakes and cookies were coming out of the oven (our kitchen smells like heaven even during prep) we were often exhausted and had to keep going. Thankfully, we have a wonderful Orange Clementine team now!

Orange Clementine – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Orange Clementine makes citrus cakes, cookies, and specialty items and packages them in presentation packaging that looks cute, fresh, and sparkles like California sunshine.

Our signature Orange Pound Cake is our specialty. It’s made with California oranges, zest and juice. This is the cake that gets the “amazing’ remark when we give out samples.

The other popular item is the Orange Cookie – it’s made with orange oil. We make the only true California citrus cakes and cookies and our wooden crate packaging is unique and much admired. We are most proud of having built the Orange Clementine brand ourselves.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Brand recognition is really rewarding. When we go to events or markets we love hearing, “I’ve seen you before! I love your products.” To think that we created this business, literally from scratch – we feel very successful to be recognized and for our product to be shared be people sending happy and thoughtful messages and love.
