Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Rosales.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Beauty School right after high school. Not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I was highly influenced by my mother to step into the beauty world because I would always get my mom ready for her outings. She always asked so she knew I was doing something good. Once thing I remember, like an aha moment was every time I got her ready her mood changed, her posture, her self esteem rose, and then I realized the power I held with a simple hairstyle.
During the one and a half years of beauty school, my schedule was so tight. I would start school at 8:00 am, to 4:30 pm, then straight to work 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. I worked at a retail store and weekends were also busy. I barely had time to eat! Some of the scenarios I ran into during beauty school were things like “.. I’m just here because my parents said I had to go to school” another one was “……I’m not even going to do hair when I finish this”. Fresh into college, paying my way threw, hearing this was just confusing to say the least. I soon realized, I started this journey I’m going to finish it and be great at it. I took all the negative things people said and did all the things students didn’t want to do in class., converted it into fuel and motivation to learn as much as I could in the time we had. Fast forward to almost completing my 1600 hours of school, one of my friends told me she knew of a salon that was hiring an assistant. I went, got thrown into a blow dry service on the spot, and was hired.
At this salon in City of San Marino is where I assisted for two quick years. The amount of talent and family vibe at this salon was undeniable. Here is where I learned all my foundation as a colorist and designer and finisher. There was a goldmine of knowledge at this salon, and I took advantage of that. At the end of my time assisting, one of the final steps was to put on a small fashion show, almost like a debut to have a chair To work in in the Salon. I did it with all the support of my family friends and salon family. I’ll never forget that feeling.
Fast forward a couple of years, some of my piers commented on potentially auditioning to be a Redken Artist Educator. I looked into it, talk with some people about what that journey in tailed. I was sold, sent my audition tape to one of the biggest hair company in the USA. Out of 300 auditions 40 people were selected. Little did I know my life was about to change.
In Tampa, Florida is where we had our training. I was in a room full of people from all over the United States. It’s funny, as a network we have this inside notion of our experience that, clearly we are the only ones that get it, and it’s just so hard to explained to others that didn’t experience it. I would call it a bond.
At this training, you learned so much of yourself first, with tears and everything. Followed by personal grounding, the brand and facilitation skill. This by far has been the best decision I’ve ever made.
In 2012-2013, I had an established clientele in San Marino, CA. I was also squizing in some days in Covina CA to accommodate my clients closer to home. I was teaching other salon professionals about our brand and how to use our products, I was busy!
I became a mother to my son Joaquin Roman Cipres, My Coraźon. During my time off, I had to prioritize what was the best for me in regards to my place of work and scheduling. Some other events that took place when I came back to work made it so clear to me that I needed what was best for me and my family.
So in 2016, I became an independent stylist at a studio in West Covina, CA. Backed up by an amazing brand, traveling for trainings and programs, working with other artist, doing fashion shows, being on set for special events, redcapert awards, shows, Wedding. Along with working behind the chair making my clients feel beautiful, giving them more pep in their step, and more confident, then when they walked in. I am a Redken Educator, an established Hairstylist at Cameos in West Covina CA, where it’s my second home and I love it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, those struggles needed to happen in order for me to strive. However as I became more established, different struggles still come up.
One time in beauty school, I was set back nine weeks. For being shy of 3 points to pass the class. It was the manicure/business class, with a teacher that had a little bit of controversy. However, since most of the girls didn’t want to take clients I did. In doing so, I didn’t finish all of my nail operations to pass the class. I asked to speak with the drean and ask for video footage to confirm my work projects, and it was a big No. I was so discouraged, wanting to quite. With the help of my mom, I went back and did it again.
Please tell us about Cameos.
My business is in a small quaint suite, where I have two salon chairs and a shampoo bowl. With coffee or tea on deck, in a space of relaxation. Here is where the magic happens and I can book clients and give them amazing color and style.
I specialize in Color, design, and finishing. With Color, I love that lived in color, more natural, harmonized, soft shiny hair, along with color corrections, and Hair Extensions. With Design, I love cutting short detailed hair, I enjoy cutting long hair and create different movements with layering. A fringe is always powerful. Design would be a must. Finishing hair is just as important as all of the above. When my clients have their hair color done, I want to make sure their styling complements that. I am most proud of holding on to my retention, and never stop growing. Established a safe environment to be creative and call it my own. I think what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail, the ability to consult properly, and most import of all is being professional.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start all over, I’m not sure that I would have changed anything. However, after starting, I would have for sure saved more money!
Along with having my own suite sooner.
