Meet CJ Hammond of Gloveworx in Santa Monica/Century City

Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ Hammond.

CJ, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Met Leyon 2008 when I went on a full scholarship to play football at temple university. He was senior and I was a freshman.

After I graduated Temple, I pursued a professional football career and was cut on different occasions trying to make it. I decided to hang up my lifelong dream and wanted to train other athletes.

I interned underneath my trainer Fran Penny (Pinnacle Performance) who trailed me out of college getting me ready to pursue my professional football career.

In 2014, I got an opportunity to move to Miami and open up a gym with my best friend called “Fit Legend Sports & Fitness.”

It was the highlight of my life. Something I could call mine and love what I do. At this time I met my most recent and current mentor Bijai Jones. He is the sole reason for me becoming the great coach and trainer I am today. He taught me the ins and outs of athletic training, performance, and rehab. It excelled my career and my social platform grew because of it. I was training athletes from all over South Florida and from the outside looking in you would have thought I was doing great.

But behind all of that, I was in a dark place. Financially, I was struggling trying to run a gym and my personal life. Struggled to pay bills and keep my business open. And not to mention, I was in a bad relationship with my investor. We didn’t see eye to eye.

After two years, we decided to part ways and close Fit Legend down. From here, I was lost and didn’t know what to do. I eventually starting training out of a faculty called Fast Twitch in Miami. One of the most well-renowned facilities in South Florida.

From there, I was put to the task of training the elite boxing camp “King Kong.” Most noticeable fighters Luis Ortiz and J.C. Payano. Both whom are nationally recognized.

One random day, I get a call from Leyon. Whom I haven’t seen in almost eight years. We stayed connected through social media and always admired each other’s work.

He told me about his boxing fitness gym Gloveworx and asked if I would like to come out for a visit and possibly relocate to LA and join the team.

Mind you, I have never been to LA, let alone know anyone, and only a couple hundred bucks in my bank account. Living out of my car to be exact.

So, he flies me out two days later where I meet the team and shadow the studio for a couple of days. Remember, this is a boxing gym in which I have no experience in that field. Leyon promised that if I came out he would teach me the boxing and that I would revamp and construct the strength & conditioning program at Gloveworx.

At this point in my life, I had already hit rock bottom and decided that I had nothing lose, and told myself that I will be successful in whatever I do if I put my mind to it.

So, Leyon and Gloveworx relocated me three weeks after from the time he first called me and my visit. That’s how fast it happened. Didn’t know what I was getting myself into.

Fast forward almost two years later and my life has completely changed. I went from being a renowned strength/conditioning & performance coach to a respected boxing coach as well. Something I would never think was possible.

Went from no one knowing me in LA to be one of the most sought out after trainers in LA. It’s hard to even get booked on my schedule. And now we are well on our way to opening up our 3rd location in NY (inside World Trade Center Oculus).

I want to personally thank Leyon for believing in me and helping me in my time of need. And I owe it all to him and Gloveworx. Now, we are taking over the fitness industry together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning my own business.
Financially
Mentally

And moving to LA far away from my family in Washington, DC, and Miami. Not knowing if I could make a good living in LA.

Gloveworx – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m most known for strength & conditioning and sports rehab. And now, since moving to LA and am now a boxing coach as well.

And that’s what sets me apart. I specialize in many different fields which makes me more valuable and attracted to clients and businesses.

Thing I’m most proud of is that while I don’t have my own physical gym anymore, my Fit Legend brand still lives on and thrives through Gloveworx, and I am always appreciative of that.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Not giving up. Taking the risk at 25 to open up a gym. Not quitting when things got rough and when I was financially unstable.

And taking the risk to move far away from my family to pursue my dreams and do what I wanted to do. And now look how it has paid off
