Meet Kara Rice of Citron Design Group in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Rice.

Kara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Citron Design Group is a full-service Commercial Design Studio based in Long Beach, California. Always striving to improve the communities we live in, Citron aims to service our Clients by honoring the architectural history of our community and enrich people’s lives through design. We are experts in adaptive reuse and restoration of neglected buildings, serving our communities with our design of local shops and restaurants, creative office spaces, unique lifestyle and fitness facilities, and creatively furnishing multifamily housing projects.

As a full-service design studio — able to guide our customers through Design, Permitting, Engineering and Construction — we are with them all the way through their project journeys. We believe that our consideration for the entire project and respect for our community architecture is the key to accomplishing our clients’ vision.

Has it been a smooth road?
No road worth traveling is easy. We here at Citron can attest to that! All challenges in life help us to grow and improve. We founded this studio on 2014, after many years in the design-build Construction world. Those years included the 2007 recession, and the lessons learned managing to keep a small business above water through that time taught us immeasurable lessons about grit, fortitude, and humility — to name a few. As a small growing business we of course still have our struggles; balancing life, finding the clients we can serve best, figuring out the best path for growth… through it all, we know that all experiences teach us and make us better. We appreciate the opportunities we find to challenge ourselves and improve as a team every day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Citron Design Group – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Citron Design Group is a Commercial Interior Design Studio and Retailer of salvage-material furniture and fixtures, designed and hand made in-house.

Specializing in adaptive reuse building redesign, Citron opened its doors in 2014 as a transition from Construction to Design for both of its founding members. Working together in Design-Build Construction for the previous decade, they both chose to hang up their construction hats and become full-time designers. Originally located in the East Village Arts District in a communal office, Citron’s new office and showroom are still located on historic 4th Street just a few short blocks away in the bustling up-and-coming Franklin District.

It has been an exciting five years here at Citron Design Group, as we have expanded our team to include a handful of extremely talented designers, engineers and fabricators to help us bring our visions to life. We are so grateful for the breadth of clientele we have had the privilege to work with. Commercial Developers and Brokers, Creative Office Owners, Multi-family Housing Developers, Restaurant, Fitness, and Hotel Groups all call on us for help, as well as many amazing local small business’ who contact us when they are ready to launch a new brick and mortar experience.

Here at Citron we strive daily to maintain and translate our core values in all of our work: Dedication to producing high-quality unique work, simple accessible design, respecting what we find, and improving our community through design.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Long Beach is unique in that it is sandwiched between the big metropolises of Los Angeles and Orange County but is nothing like either for them. It is very diverse. We have pride in Long Beach because we have been here for a long time and have watch the city struggle with its own identity. We like the people who live here — they make it an interesting place to live. People are what makes your city special. We feel engaged and welcomed by this community. It’s not fancy, but it IS real. In our city, small businesses are still respected. They are stakeholders in the community and we hope to never lose that feeling of inclusion. Because if we do, we kind of lose who we are as a city.
