Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrystian Contreras.
Chrystian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
With information, obsession with information. And through information I found my source of expression. Looking back, I have to acknowledge skateboarding, my older brother (elohes), brother in law (peanut), Tony A (el jefe), and of course several other people. Because of the family surrounding me, I was given a different perspective for life. Growing up, I sold t-shirts for my brother’s brand in high school. Not realizing then that this kind of information would be so important to me ten years down the line. I wanted my own skate brand. Something I can call my own and can wear proudly. But the idea didn’t just stop there. I needed to attach a real meaning to it. Something to remind me what life is truly and something id hope someone can learn from. Shedding light on the things I believe matter. The mind, nature, meditation, mathematics, science, books, love, appreciation of life. All these ignored topics due to chasing money/materials. I believe the timing is right to help spread this knowledge. My plan was to pull people who Love streetwear into a brand giving you more than just material. Today I’m nowhere near where I want to be. But everyday is an opportunity to get closer. So I can’t stop this. I believe in it too much.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all, I kind of look at this brand as a metaphor for life. A lot of highs and a lot of lows. Can never be content because it all can change overnight. It’s a constant struggle to plan your next move always. and when you can’t do the things you want to do right away it can definitely bring on anxiety. But its the struggle I love to face. There’s is nothing else I would want to suffer for. The happiness it brings always outweighs the bad. So I keep striving for peaks. Creating is my favorite high but it also brings on bad trips.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mind at Large Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
Mind at Large is clothing line I started in Cerritos, CA. It’s unique from the message alone. But what sets it apart would be the fact I can be myself. I’ve created a way to express myself and I believe we are all unique individuals. But in a lot of cases just to busy trying to be like something else. being yourself will always set you apart. I’m simply proud for its existence. It’s just the beginning but I have so much in stored. The team I’m surrounded with. I have complete trust and confidence in. Not only is this clothing but I implemented videos to help market the brand. I’ve connected with brilliant photographers and videographers to help create my visions. Creating videos for drops has slowly become my true art form. It brings the best out of me, I think. I want to continue to grow on that end and hopefully, one day have the budget to make commercials that no one has seen before.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Simply being born in the family I have is a great luck. I had the greatest role models. Having friends who are healthy for each other and showed me love since day 1. It reflects on all my work. Again I haven’t shown much but I have a lot to give. Of course, timing and unfortunate events that require me to step back happen. But I take them in as lessons that prepare me for the future. For example, my car was towed the same week I was ordering my next drop. Since I had to pay for the tow I lost all the money for the product and I couldn’t release it. Now I know where not to park my car, hahaha.
