Meet Christopher and Sandy Johnson of Hearts of Jade in East Ventura County, Old Town Moorpark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher and Sandy Johnson.

Christopher and Sandy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hearts of Jade story is about walking away from a seemingly valued path to follow a heartfelt path. In the spring of 2012, Sandy and I took a very needed respite from our healthcare careers and caring for my elderly father with dementia. Our getaway took us to Cambria on the central coast of California. Having found a cozy beach cottage we settled in for some rest & relaxation. The first evening, I shared with Sandy a feeling to do something different. Perhaps unplug from my job, without a sense of a new direction. We scheduled some beachcombing for the second day at low tide, about 11 am. Along with many shells and rocks, I found a 23.5 lb green stone in the shape of a heart.

Unknowingly, this started our new path. Upon arriving home we encountered many more hearts. Seemingly both affirming and guiding us in a new direction. Sandy responded to a For Lease sign newly applied to the old gas station For Sale sign. Meeting with the broker and later, sharing her thoughts on opening a Flower Shop. I wasn,t feeling Flowers and I suggested Succulents. And so started our new path to open Hearts of Jade. In the spring of 2012, we made an offer to lease with the option to buy 213 E High St. the Old Gas Station and the residence 640 Bard St. Opening Hearts of Jade in September 2012 and completing the purchase 2014 and moving into the 1920s Arts and Craft style house. Able to both officially retire 2012, we started our new careers as small business owners. Defining a true Mom and Pop shop.

Hearts of Jade is a garden boutique that embodies the hybrid spirit of “shabby chic” and “earthy art”.

We are the product of integrating some of the most current trends of decor and going green, presented in a whimsical environment, laden with living works of art that are as practical as they are beautiful. Featuring our menu of DIY Succulent Workshops, receiving 5-star reviews across the board, Hearts of Jade can assure our customers of an experience to remember.

Soon to finish our sixth year, we are a marker for new life to live in the heart of historical Old Town Moorpark.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As first-time business owners, we have encountered many challenges along the way. Most lessons learned after the fact.

Oddly, we have had few obstacles. Our path was has been affirmed along the way and continues to be affirmed.
