Meet Christine Tagatac of Beauty Technique Studio in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Tagatac.

Christine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for the beauty industry started early on. I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and a granddaughter to two grandmothers that were both beauticians. I started at the early age of five being around them both separately watching them do hair. I started assisting when I was seven years old handing my grandma’s end papers when she did perms and spraying each section wet for her before she rolled the client’s hair. I started doing hair styling on the kids in my neighborhood around that age as well.

By high school, I was cutting, coloring and continuing to style the hair of coarse without a license. I got my first job ever working as a receptionist at a hair salon where I began to gain more knowledge and love for hair.

I wanted to attend cosmetology school when I graduated high school but my passion for painting and drawing took me on a different path in college. I was on my road to a studio art degree. I studied creative painting, drawing and how to work with different media.

I was in college for about two years and into my first year is where I discovered the art of makeup artistry.

The face became my canvas. And I quickly taught myself how to do makeup through practice and through reading fashion magazines. I would practice executing magazine tears on my friends and family.

While studying in college I was quickly moving my way up the ranks working at Nordstrom in the junior women’s department. My goal was to be a buyer. I eventually dropped out of college for work and soon after I took on a promotion at the Nordstrom Glendale as a manager. During this time I took a break from hair and makeup to focus on growing with Nordstrom. I commuter from Santa Barbara to Glendale for about one year.

One year later unforeseen health issues with my mother brought me back to Santa Barbara to care for her and back to Nordstrom Santa Barbara. About four months later I interviewed for a makeup artistry position at the MAC Counter. After four interviews I was hired. This is where my makeup career took off.

I was with MAC for almost 16 years when I finally decided to go to cosmetology school to become a licensed cosmetologist.

One year later I was licensed. About a month before I graduated I was signed with Maven Artists agency doing hair, makeup and grooming. Fast forward to two years after graduation Beauty Technique Studio was created. I opened up my own space with my good friend at the Salon Republic in Studio City. I provide hair, makeup and education in my studio. It’s never too late to follow your dreams and this was one of them.

Has it been a smooth road?
As we know there is no such thing as a smooth road in life. I think my biggest challenge was making the choice to change careers and leave a stable and lucrative career of 16 years and essentially start over and start my own business. I was concerned of my age in starting something new and the years it could take to build my business. I would be jumping into a career that takes people years and years to build to be profitable and I needed this to happen in one year lol.

Because I had already built the foundation with my years of experience prior in the beauty industry most of which were in management I was confident that I could get my business going and eventually be profitable. This was a dream of mine to have my own studio doing hair and makeup since I was a little girl and now I’m living it. It’s never too late and what I learned through all of my bumps in the road is to always believe anything is possible and to surround myself with positive and driven people. Through this new change, I did let go of over 20 years of friendship with people that were not positive and did not believe in me and I’m not only happier because of it, but I am going to be even more successful because of it.

Cosmetology school was very natural for me because of all of my exposure to hair.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty Technique Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have the perfect space with my good friend in Studio City. Location was everything for me because of the work I do with Maven Artists Agency.

I wanted a space that was accessible 24 hours and seven days a week and in a location where most of my new clients would be able to travel to as well as for me to travel to.

The name of my business is Beauty Technique Studio. I created this name from what makes my beauty studio stand out. I create an in-depth experience with every client that sits in my chair. It starts with the consultation, the process, the service, and most importantly the education. Education is included in every service I provide.

Education includes a products used, what I am using, how I am using them, and how they can recreate their service when they get home.

My goal for every client is to fulfill their hair and makeup goals and to create a comfortable environment for them to ask questions and share their feedback with me if something is not meeting their needs.

In my studio, I offer haircuts, hair color, balayage, Owens, relaxers, makeup, wedding makeup and hair, and makeup and hair Private one on one lessons.

I also provide on-location hair and makeup services if clients are unable or prefer not to come into my hair studio.

I also service clients in Santa Barbara, Monterrey, Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Growing up I was always interested in entertainment. When I was seven I wanted to be a singer and when I was ten I wanted to be a comedian.

I loved having friends and I was always passionate about making people happy. I was often the person that could make the crowd laugh and have fun. And as an adult my entire family and I have a big one, look to me for advice and support. And they knew that if the family was every going through tough times I would be the glue that brought everyone back together.

I was very interested in art specifically Painting and Pottery. I have always been a driven person growing up and a fighter. I believed in having fun always.
