Meet Christine Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Rose.

Christine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Ojai and as far back as I can remember, I had a love of two things, food and magic. Haha! Let’s start with food. So many of my childhood memories are centered around food and the power it had to bring people together. I remember Christmas Eve at my Auntie’s house, the kitchen would be filled to the brim with all of the cousins, grandparents, and the like making a feast of tamales, enchiladas, rice, and more. You could hear shrieks of laughter and chatter overflowing from the kitchen, and even as a child I knew that was the place to be. There was something inexplicable about the buzz of energy in there that I was so drawn to. At the time, I felt too intimidated to try to cook anything myself, but I know those memories are things that stuck with me forever.

Now about the other thing I loved, magic…tehehe. Another vivid memory I have of growing up in Ojai was constantly wandering around our yard collecting flowers, grass, twigs, feathers, whatever I could get my hands on, and making “potions.” I would plop them all into big metal mixing bowls and stir everything together with water from the hose, pretending that I was the resident woodland fairy of the house. There was something about that experience that still feels so dreamy to me and I feel like even as an adult I find myself chasing that intangible sense of sparkle and whimsy. Little did I know how both of these seemingly random and distinct memories with food and magical musings would culminate into the beautiful business that I have now!

In the summer of 2018, I was living in Kansas City as a grad student pursuing my PhD in Health Psychology. I had been in the program since 2015, and to be totally frank it was a complete shit show. There was a lot of mistreatment, discrimination, and emotional trauma that I was experiencing in the program and as the universe would have it, I very early on discovered cooking as a creative outlet that sparked what little joy I had in my life at the time. Fast forward to the summer of 2018, when I attended a day retreat that completely turned my world upside down.

We were posed with a seemingly simple question. What lights you up? Followed by the obvious follow up question of, “why don’t you do more of that?” I knew in that moment that I needed to pursue my love of cooking and take a complete leap of faith and trust that all the details would fall into place. And to be completely honest, they have. Since then, I’ve left grad school with my Master’s instead of a PhD, moved back to Ojai, and started a life and business that I’m so dang happy to have.

I started with doing custom meal planning and cooking for folks and then that evolved to me cooking for larger groups in the context of events, retreats, and such. And then, I finally found my sweet spot when I started hosting my own events. It felt like the stars had aligned and I was finally able to have a perfect melding of my love of food and the power it has to bring people together as well as my love of all things magical and dreamy. The gatherings I host are intended to transport you to another world, even if just for the night. It brings me so much joy to create spaces for folks to truly feel connected to themselves and the universe all while being able to share a meal with other like-minded humans.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Haha…if anyone says entrepreneurship has been a smooth road, they’re lying. I mean, from day one I have had to be my biggest cheerleader. There will be times when no one understands you or understands your vision. There will be countless times that people ask when you’re going to get a “real job.” There will be times when you start to believe them and doubt everything you’re working towards. Do. Not. Give. Up. I repeat! Do not give up!

This is your life. And you only have one. Why the hell would you ever want to spend it doing something that doesn’t bring an ear to ear smile to your face? Now, that’s not to say that following your dreams isn’t hard fucking work. It totally is. But when it’s good, and all that work has paid off, it is so much sweeter than you could ever imagine.

I’d say that the biggest challenge is continuing to believe in myself. Yes, of course, there are logistical challenges. But those pale in comparison to the ultimate challenge of my ability to stick it out no matter what. No matter what curveballs get thrown my way, I have to be ready to face them and not give up.

Please tell us about Christine Rose Creates.
My business, Christine Rose Creates, is the culmination of all the things I love into one brand. As the name implies, my business is less so about a particular product and more about me embracing the idea that I am my brand. I’m constantly creating and this brand is a way for me to share that with the world.

Whether I’m creating delicious food for someone else’s retreat, special event, or what have you or I’m creating an entire magical experience surrounding the sharing of a meal for one of my own gatherings, the intent behind it all is the same. Everything I do circles back to creating beautiful moments of authentic community and connection centered around food. Food brings people together and that’s why I love it. When I’m cooking, I am infusing every drop with the intention of that food becoming the catalyst for a moment of connection.

Creating and hosting my own gatherings feels like I dream come true for me because not only do I get to express my creativity through the food I’m serving, but I get the opportunity to curate the entire experience surrounding the sharing of that meal. For instance, The Mind Body Soul Supper Club is an intimate monthly gathering I host under the evening stars in Ojai where we explore things like spiritual healing, self discovery, and more all followed by a delicious and nourishing meal. Down to the flowers and candles I adorn the table with, every detail of these gatherings is thought out to create a truly dreamlike space to experience the magic of the evening and leave feeling better than you arrived.

I just love to create moments like this through food and gatherings and that’s really what Christine Rose Creates is all about. It’s my magic wand to add dashes of sparkle and joy to everything I get my hands on.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I know this is so cliché, but honestly I wouldn’t change a thing. Have there been rough patches that I wish I could’ve skipped over? Absolutely. But, I am so grateful for this journey. Every failure has taught me something that has ultimately strengthened my business. I trust that the universe knows the exact path I need to be on, and I’m along for the ride!
