Meet Christine Moghadam of Corc Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Moghadam.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christine. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Corc Yoga began with my love for travel. Two years ago, my husband and I took a trip to Portugal. We were grieving through a heavy loss in our family, and I needed to get away. I was at the point in my life where I was searching for a new dream. I felt lost and disconnected.

During our time in Portugal, I experienced something I have never felt before, a strong and deep connection with the people and the culture. It became more than just a vacation, it woke up a part of me that had been buried down for so long.

I remember walking through the bazaar one day and came across these beautiful cork bracelets. It sparked a curiosity. I began to notice cork everywhere and learned that Portugal is the largest producer of Cork and it’s the only tree that regenerates its own bark.

When I came home, I felt compelled to return and find a way to give back to this country that felt like my second home. I spent a year learning about Cork, connecting with manufacturers in Portugal with plans to return with my kids the following year.

As I began to discover more about the cork making process and it’s deeply rooted history in Portugal I felt a calling to build a business around cork with the foundation of giving back to others, particularly the mental health community. The properties of cork are important to me not only because it’s biodegradable and sustainable but because it supports families that have made their livelihood of this cork industry.

As a soccer mom of two, I always aspire to make sure I find time for myself. I always knew that yoga was a great outlet, but the challenge was always making time to do it. I also knew that the Yoga community cares about the environment and sustainable practices.

I decided that a yoga mat would be a perfect way to include all the amazing elements of cork. Yoga also has so many great benefits, It lowers your heart rate and provides stress relief. After all who isn’t stressed out these days? Yoga is great for everyone, and in the end, it benefits mental health – another personal passion of mine.

So with the indisputable connection between the benefits of yoga and the impact of mental health, and my love for Portugal, Corc Yoga was born. Last summer, I took my husband and kids back to Portugal, and we found an amazing 3rd generation owned a factory that was just as excited to partner with us to create these beautiful yoga mats.

Corc Yoga is committed to supporting a healthy lifestyle. Each leaf in our logo signifies our commitment to the mind, body, and soul. Our giving back to the giving tree program ensures our active partnership with youth mental health causes in Portugal and in the U.S.A. portion of each sale is donated to these causes.

At the end of the day, this is what is important to us – that we can make an impact on the environment and in our communities one yoga mat at a time.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been bumpy at times. The first struggle was really getting our company launched, from finding the right factory who was willing to take the risk and venture into something completely new and different to multiple trials and tests to produce a cork yoga mat made without chemicals… it wasn’t something that happened overnight.

Another challenge has been educating consumers why we are different from other yoga mat brands and the benefits of cork. We are not just another brand trying to sell products, but we are also a building a community that is centered around moving towards wellness, a healthy lifestyle and seeking to support sustainable practices.

As a mom, I struggle to balance work, my family, friends, and self-care… it’s easy to get pulled in multiple directions. It’s a learning process for me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Corc Yoga – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are committed to supporting a healthy lifestyle. Each leaf in our logo signifies our commitment to the mind, body, and soul.

Corc Yoga mats will help you build a more meaningful relationship between your mind, body, and environment with their sustainable cork material. The mats are made from organic cork harvested from trees in Portugal. No trees are cut down in the process, making them a 100% recyclable, renewable and biodegradable source.

Other benefits include a non-slip grip thanks to its honeycomb structure and antimicrobial and hypoallergenic properties. Because air makes up over 50% of cork’s volume, it’s a lightweight mat you can take anywhere.

What sets us apart: Unlike traditional rubber yoga mats which can contain heavy metals or harsh hormone-disrupting chemicals like PVC, Corc Yoga mats are both hormone and chemical-free.

Two things that I am most proud of:
1. Corc Yoga not only inspires positive mental, physical and environmental change, it supports a greater world connection by giving a percentage of every purchase to youth mental health organizations in Portugal who are working to solve a mental health crisis within the country.
2. Our manufacturers are locals working in a centuries-old tradition, growing and
harvesting cork on family farms

I guess you could say I am known for my love for travel, inspiring others to move forward in spite of their fears and follow their dreams, never wait for the perfect time because that time is usually now. I love people and building community wherever I am. Community is one of the main reasons why Corc Yoga exists and why we do what we do.
