Meet Christine Hatch of The Mortgage Group in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Hatch.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
IMAGINE THIS… you are a young man in the 1970s working on the sun-baked beaches of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. You live in one of the impoverished Iron Curtain countries riddled by hyperinflation and political tension. You have an opportunity to flee, even though you know it means leaving your family and homeland behind.

This is the story of my father, Gary Hatch, who over 40 years ago, escaped communist Bulgaria and fled to Istanbul to seek political asylum at the American Embassy. It was 1975 and after a brief stay there and in Italy, he landed in New York without knowing anyone or any English. After a time, with hard work and determination, he found a job, saved a little money, and decided he wanted to live where it was warm leading him to California. My father knew he had the drive and work ethic to work for himself. He was in America…and anything was possible! He had no family and no money, but what he did have is freedom, he was a free man, who had ambition, determination and mostly he believed in himself that as long as you work hard, stay focused and are willing to sacrifice, then anything in this great country can be achieved. He started buying real estate in the 80’s and eventually obtained his real estate license.

One of his clients encouraged him to become a mortgage broker, which he did and opened his own firm in Burbank in 1995, The Mortgage Group. I grew up in the business and saw all the struggles and hard work that went into being a business owner. I knew my purpose was to continue my father’s legacy by helping others achieve their dream too (the dream of homeownership) thus taking over the business in 2006. Today, my sister and I (aka The Mortgage Sisters) get to wake up every day and teach clients how to use their mortgage as a way to create wealth and security. Knowing my father came to this country with nothing in his pocket and created life through hard work, focus, sacrifice, discipline and determination is what has inspired me over the years and gets me up every day to do what I love. He is my example of the American Dream and why I wake up everyday excited to help others make their American Dream a reality.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, definitely many bumps in the road. I don’t think there ever is a smooth road in life, but the bumps in the road allow us to learn, grow and get better.

Some of the struggles were showing up for clients in ways my father did, continuing his legacy in the same fashion clients were used to. They are some big shoes to fill. He build the business all through word of mouth so I knew I had to have a level of service that clients would be outrageously happy to introduce us to their family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

Please tell us about The Mortgage Group.
We are a family-owned business specializing in mortgage financing for home purchases and refinances. We help buyers get pre-approved for a home loan and walk them through the process of home buying as well as help homeowners use their mortgage as a strategy for their short term and long term financial goals.

What I am most proud of as a company is that we teach, lead and inspire clients to get a plan, clearly define their values and map out a strategy for sustainable wealth through homeownership. As mortgage advisors, we build lifelong relationships one client at a time through the conduit of trusted consultation and a referable level of product and process.

I believe in relationships, not transactions. To me, life is about all about service and being in service. I have been blessed to be able to use the mortgage arena as an avenue to serve others.

As a business owner in the city of Burbank and growing up in this city, community involvement is huge for me. My passion for dogs leads me to volunteer with the Burbank Animal Shelter where I am currently on the Board of Directors. And my love for this great country and our military has lead me to be a member of the Burbank Veterans Committee.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Expanded our company sooner. We are in the process of opening a branch in Maui, Hawaii where my father currently resides full time. It was his life long dream to retire in Hawaii and he made it happen. So it’s pretty fitting that we expand our business out to the islands to be able to continue serving more clients.
