Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Yannello.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Christina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started @barefacedfemme as a way to document my skincare journey. I started to break out and became so self-conscious about my skin so I stopped posting for a while due to my insecurity. I soon realized that I should not hold myself back in order to fulfill the expectation that Instagram is a place for singular perfectionism. I soon realized that the acne and body confidence community on Instagram is incredibly welcoming and supportive. I began to post photos of my acne and Accutane journey to share with others and document my experience, hoping that my journey would help someone else. Although being vulnerable is extremely difficult online, I feel fortunate that my account has helped others remember that they are not alone and that they will get through this. I love that my account has become a safe place for everyone to ask questions and connect with me!
My acne scars are a constant reminder of how much I’ve grown and how strong I am and I feel so lucky to continue to share my story with you.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Acne is a disease that is physical, emotional, and mental. My journey has been bumpy for sure. My self-confidence infringed on my ability to post to my account and truly show every aspect of my journey and to this day it is still something that bothers me.
When my account grew, I struggled with keeping up with engagement with my existing and new followers while trying to grow my connections with fellow members in the skin community. Besides engagement, coming up with exciting content ideas can be challenging, but it is so rewarding when I post something that truly makes me happy.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I run an Instagram account called @barefacedfemme that focusses on promoting self-love and advocating to normalize acne. My account has grown due to documenting my Accutane journey and sharing acne tips. I also focus on sharing my favorite beauty products and my life in general!
I think what set’s me apart is that I have been so vulnerable with my followers that we really have a relationship and trust with one another, and I am so proud of this. My account goes against the typical Instagram norm of a singular notion of beauty, and I believe that a lot of people appreciate that.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up always wanting to be an adult. I am and have always been independent and I would say wise beyond my years! I was always chatty and loved watching my mom do her makeup and skincare, so I am not surprised I am pursuing it today!
