Meet Christina Loden of PerSoma Wellness in Rolling Hills Estates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Loden.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my studies in Chinese medicine and holistic healthcare when I was 21 years old, having watched my mother suffer from various health conditions. I happened to be visiting her when she was very ill and her doctors had exhausted all of their options trying to find what was wrong with her. Eventually, they told her that they couldn’t find anything wrong, that it was all in her head, and sent her home. She eventually decided to see an acupuncturist, and the improvement she experienced after just one treatment was astounding. From that moment on, I was committed to learning everything I could about the medicine. I had never anticipated that the desire to heal my mother would put me in a position to help many others as well.

I began my private practice in 2008 with a general focus on overall health and wellness. Over the years things have changed and evolved until I felt a very strong calling a couple years ago to focus my treatments on women and families. I started hearing and seeing a trend with my female patients that they weren’t being “heard” in the world, and this was usually attached to their physical complaints. I wanted to change the way we, as women, show up in the world. I wanted to provide the support needed for all women to embrace their own power. To become physically healthy, emotionally healthy, confident, and strong. That desire was what prompted me to start PerSoma Wellness.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say that most things that are worthwhile are not achieved without some struggle along the way. As human beings, we are ever evolving and that evolution of self is often times brought on by facing our greatest fears. My greatest fear was realized when my son, who was 3 months old at the time, was diagnosed with a condition called Neurofibromatosis type 1. It was a devastating period of time for me as I was navigating the spectrum of emotions that come with receiving this news. It taught me the importance and power of women coming together in support of each other. It taught me that we don’t have to do it all alone (we can’t, really). It taught me to embrace vulnerability. In short, this was the most life-changing, most inspirational period of my life and was the foundation for the work I currently do in my practice.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PerSoma Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
PerSoma Wellness is a holistic health studio in Rolling Hills Estates.

As a solo practitioner, I work a lot with acupuncture, cupping, Tui Na bodywork, and essential oils. I treat a wide range of conditions, but the foundation of my work almost always revolves around the emotional connections that the body/mind has made to these diseases/disorders. I think this alone sets me apart from most other acupuncturists as I am constantly listening for the things that are left unsaid (because, as women, we all do this).

I am most proud of the amazing connection I have with my patients. I am so incredibly proud of the work they are doing in their lives and watching them become more empowered beings every day. From a company standpoint, I wanted to create an environment that would foster personal growth for patients, but also give back to the community and various causes. Because of that, 10% of proceeds are donated to various charities. I like to have engagement, so I ask patients if they’d like to choose from a few different pre-selected charities. It is always fun to see patients respond and at the same time, brings awareness to these causes.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I suppose it depends on how you look at luck. My dad used to tell me growing up that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. I believe in this version of luck, and so I think that in doing the work and preparing myself along the way, I have been able to take advantage of opportunities that may not have been presented to others who were less prepared. There have been many moments where things seemed like pure good luck or bad luck. But, ultimately, I believe it is all about hard work and preparation. And learning from mistakes made.
