Meet Christian Denea Ellis of The Kabob Shoppe Catering Service in Claremont and Inland Empire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Denea Ellis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christian Denea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started cooking at the age of five and learned just about everything from my grandmother (Mary Rose) and my aunt (Lois). While everyone else was playing outside, I was sitting in the kitchen watching them cook and put flavors together. My father taught me how to make BBQ sauce from scratch and how to grill everything when I was around 11 years old. I come from a family of cooks on both sides of my family ranging from southern to West Indian flavors. My auntie Michelle gave me my love of island flavors and my grandmother showed me all about southern cooking. Every other flavor profile I know is from experimenting or from watching cooking shows for hours.

I never really had a zeal for being a business owner growing up, it all seemed like too much work, but once I was out of a job I started looking for other ways to make money. I tried pet sitting, hairdressing, doordash, amazon flex, and babysitting but none of it really fulfilled me. One day while fasting, I prayed to God asking for some clarity on what I was supposed to do. The next thing I know all these recipes came flooding my mind and I wrote them all down in a little notebook and the name came next. I’ve always loved Mediterranean food but all the kabobs tasted the same to me so I thought why not have a wide range of flavors on a kabob skewer.

I do Jamaican, Hawaiian, Spanish, and Mediterranean flavors on my menu and recently came up with a brunch menu that will showcase the southern flavors I grew up with. Now that I have my own business I can see why so many are entrepreneurs…..It’s so awesome!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road all of the time. I had to deal with lack of funds at times and the most difficult situation was losing my grandmother a few months before I launched my business. She was the sweetest person I have ever known and to lose her was extremely hard, especially since I didn’t want to do this without her. I owe the majority of knowledge of cooking to her and I will forever dedicate my business to her.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Kabob Shoppe is a catering company, so we provide main dishes, side dishes, and desserts as well as full party service if needed. Just about every kabob on the menu is grilled with the exception of the salad kabob “Just Get a Salad Sis”. I’m most known for my Jamaican BBQ jerk and Citrus Lime with chimichurri sauce kabobs. All the sauces and marinades are from scratch and we even have some vegan options as well. I am most proud of the creativity and the love that goes into each order. What sets me apart is I don’t do regular flavors that you would normally see from Mediterranean style food, I pack everything with flavor. Meats are marinated for days and sauces are made fresh for each order.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like LA is a great place my business mainly because of “word of mouth.” I get most of business because of that and there’s just so many connections in this city. I also cater to the inland empire and that’s a great place too because if you have a creative concept it gets around fast. There aren’t really any other people doing what I do in the inland empire so business is great.
