Meet Christa Ohia of Blush Makeup & Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christa Ohia.

Christa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always knew I wanted to work in the beauty industry. Throughout high school, my dream was to open my own salon as I loved the idea of doing hair, not so much makeup. I had started making concrete plans for my next move and even worked in a salon my senior year of college to get some experience of the business side and how a salon is run.

One month before I graduated from college, I found out my dad had stage 4 liver cancer that had spread to his kidneys. My parents shared the news with me the night before I headed back home to Hawaii for spring break, which I appreciate because any earlier and I would have had an absolute breakdown. My dad was my biggest supporter and best friend and to hear this news just crushed me. He went into surgery a few days after I came home to remove the tumor and begin treatment. This time was so difficult for me that I almost decided not to return to school to finish out the semester and graduate. He insisted I go back and graduate and not worry about him. I was also so blessed to have my now husband then boyfriend who was so supportive and helpful with talking with the Dean and our professors to explain the situation and help make accommodations for me while I took a few extra days to spend time with my dad.

I sucked it up and went back to school for the month before graduation. While finishing our final projects to graduate, I also had come to the realization that my dream would need to be put on hold to go back home to be with my family and take care of my dad. After we threw our hats in the air and walked across the stage, my husband and I packed up our things and moved back across the Pacific. I was astonished to see my dad at the airport when we arrived, literally half the man he was the last time I saw him. He had lost so much weight and had become so frail. During this time, I wanted to start working towards my dream so I enrolled in esthetics school, to learn makeup and skin care. One day while I was in class, my mom called and they had learned from the doctor’s appointment that my dad was given two months to live. The cancer had spread all over his body and it was and it was to the point of making him comfortable. That night, I had a thought and texted my husband, asking him if he wanted to get married. My wedding day meant the world to my dad. He would talk about it growing up what song he wanted to dance with me to and what he would wear. It was a moment that he looked forward to for a long time.

On top of that, he LOVED my husband, I think he became the golden child of the family and my dad asked him to marry me. We were planning to have our wedding a year from this point, but we really wanted my dad to be there for a moment that was so special for all of us, so we decided three weeks from that day we would tie the knot. Over the next few weeks, my dad’s health took a drastic turn and he ended up passing just two weeks later. Looking back, I was shocked with how I handled it as the feelings of such a huge loss didn’t hit me back then. We went ahead with the wedding as we knew he would know we would be getting married, which was the week after his funeral.

During this time of such a tremendous loss, our wedding was a bright spot for everyone, one that not only was happy for my husband and I but also an opportunity to honor my dad. I know my story is lengthy, but this is one of the most important parts to my journey in my business. Despite mourning the loss of my dad, for me, our wedding day was the most amazing day of my life. We were two kids right out of college with no money during a recession planning a wedding in three weeks. I had an off the rack dress and my alterations cost more than the dress itself. This was also long before the birth of Pinterest, Etsy, and all the pretty things that brides today have access to. We had the most simple wedding, but I loved every moment of it. From the ceremony to taking photos, to our honeymoon, the entire experience was magical, which is the word I like to use to describe it.

After starting my career in makeup and working on projects in television, movies, editorial, I have found a love for working with brides. My passion is rooted in helping women feel the same way I did on my wedding day. Through researching the Hawaii market, which is where I was living at the time, I realized there was no one catering to the luxury market, thus I wanted to create an experience that gave brides a luxurious, relaxing experience to start their wedding day. We moved to California about three years ago for a job offer and we now have a team of amazing Stylists in both Napa and Honolulu providing destination brides with a luxury beauty experience.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like my main struggle in my journey was described in the previous prompt, but one main obstacle I experienced business-wise was making clients understand why my services are worth the price in a status quo market. I understand my value and it was difficult figuring out why they need to pay a premium price as opposed to the market standard pricing.

Blush Makeup & Hair – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Through creating my business, I realized there was no one offering luxury services in the market I was in. All businesses I researched provide the status quo makeup and hair service. I wanted to offer an experience that went beyond makeup and hair.

Thus I created Blush Makeup and Hair. I wanted a name that perfectly described my style, the femininity of bridal, makeup, and decided Blush was the perfect name. After six years in business, we are now the luxury destination bridal beauty company of Napa and Hawaii.

We specialize in creating authentic beauty, makeup, and hair that brings out our client’s best, most beautiful self. Our mission is for our brides to look at their wedding photos in 20 years and love the way they looked just as much as they did on their wedding day.

What role has luck played in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say luck played a role in discovering my passion and love for bridal beauty, but fate definitely was a factor in where I am today. One area that I believe I did luck out on is the amazing professionals who play a huge part in our success as a business. I would not be where I am today with these great people.
