Meet Chris Hostetler of Do Not Die Young Coaching in Silver Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Hostetler.

Chris, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My first memory in life is pretty traumatic, unfortunately, At the age of five, while on the swingset in my backyard, I was the victim of a gunshot to my cervical spine that left me with lifelong pain, disabilities as well as PTSD. The bullet came from a strung-out neighbor, playing with his gun in his garage. I was millimeters from death. I’m a member of the Near-Death Experience Club — a club you never want to join.

As you can imagine, I didn’t have a “normal” childhood, to say the least. When other kids were learning to ride a bike or tie their shoes, I was spending much of my time in physical therapy learning to walk again and trying to navigate life. This is after doctors thought that there was a great chance that I would be permanently paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life. I attribute much of my being able to pull through to being blessed to the fine doctors, physical therapists and mostly the support of a family that was so kind, compassionate and patient to no end.

Those feelings of being “lesser than” and “different” or “that crippled kid” eventually lead me to find relief in the form of what so many trauma survivors end up using to cope: alcohol, drugs and isolation. Booze made me feel strong, confident for the first time in my life. Alcohol and drugs became my go-to to deal/not feel for many years. Through tumultuous relationships, through college and different trainings, through finding the courage to be a singer in bands, through it all, they were there for me … until they took control.

After moving to Los Angeles from Columbus, Ohio in 2006, I tried to start anew, new partner, new band, new life, etc. Los Angeles proved to be a blessing and a curse for me as I dove deeper into my addiction to cope even as my music career flirted with major label record deals. Those deals fell through… as did relationships, jobs, and ultimately, my health and wellbeing. I was severely depressed, anxiety-ridden, out of shape, unhealthy, trying (and failing) to cope with chronic pain, suffering from night terrors, and being constantly chewed up by PTSD.

Let’s fast forward to the good stuff! After my daughter was born, I finally ended up getting the help I needed, got sober, received help for my mental health, made physical and mental wellness my top priority. I went back to school and got certified in different modalities to try and help others in a way that I wished was available for me many years ago. In 2014, Do Not Die Young Coaching was then born.

Side note: In case you’re wondering, the business name comes from the fact that A) I nearly died at such a young age. B) My goal is to help others live a longer, empowered life to the best of my ability and C) To help others die young as late as possible — to live a happy, healthy, meaningful life in the short time we are given.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a small business owner, there are always obstacles when it comes to challenging the status quo and the “big box” businesses out there that would rather squash competitors rather than work alongside them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
OUR MISSION: Do Not Die Young Coaching is dedicated to the highest quality of fitness & nutrition coaching as well as behavioral & mental wellness consulting delivered with pride, authenticity and sincerity. Our individualized, whole-body coaching guides our clients on their quest for self-mastery.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for:
We specialize in health coaching, nutrition coaching, fitness coaching and behavioral and mental wellness consulting in order to offer a full circle of options to hit every possible area of a client’s need within our scope of practice. We are known for a truly individualized approach and consider our client’s friends.

What are you most proud of:
There is nothing greater than seeing someone breakthrough obstacles and reach a goal that has been set. Seeing so many people go through profound changes keeps the fire lit for us.

In late 2019, DNDY Coaching launched the DNDY APP which is a “one-stop-shop” for fitness, nutrition and habit coaching that allows 24/7 contact with a coach, HD instructional fitness videos, detailed meal plans, daily habit reminders, detailed goal tracking, and syncing with Fitbit, My Fitness Pal, and soon, Apple Watch.

After months of preparing, DNDY launched Behavioral and Mental Wellness Consulting with the truly amazing and respected Jess Bernal, MA, LMFT. Jess has a Masters of Arts in Counseling Psychology and is a licensed marriage and family therapist through the governing board of California Board of Behavioral Science. Jess has over ten years of clinical experience focusing on trauma exposure, neuropsychology, and behavioral modification.

What sets you apart from others:
Do Not Die Young Coaching is different from others in the field because we offer a full-circle of modalities that are proven to support sustainable change and growth, from pro athletes to someone just looking to learn healthy habits, lose weight, gain muscle, build confidence, etc. A true body/mind philosophy using evidence-based methods. You won’t find any “detoxes” or fads here. From the severe trauma and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that Chris faced, we can truly say that we “have been there” and can support, with empathy and kindness.

ALL are welcome here! We do not discriminate based on race, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, expression or disability.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What do you like best about our city: The cultural diversity in LA – having representatives of over 140 countries and over 100 different languages. My family loves the outdoors and camping. Whether you want the ocean, mountains or desert, it’s all a short car trip away!

No snow. Being originally from Ohio, I’m still grateful for the absence of snow and slush. The parks. Tacos… because tacos. There’s also a much greater focus on health and fitness in LA. Granted, there is a lot of BS out there. The Yard Muay Thai where I train Muay Thai and work with my one-on-one fitness coaching clients.

What do you like least about our city: The traffic (duh). The heartbreaking homeless population. The skyrocketing rent.
