Meet Chris and Jordana Hazel of Case By Case Canning in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Jordana Hazel.

Chris and Jordana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We come from creative backgrounds. I, Jordana, started a photography business ten years ago that continues to keep me busy. Chris spent years in television production, mostly casting and development. As he rounded out year 15, it was time for a change, he just didn’t know what that might be. Over a few beers in our friend’s backyard, our neighbor mentioned a small niche in the craft beer market that looked promising.

Cans were on the rise in popularity and craft beer drinkers weren’t as interested in bottles. But canning machinery is expensive, it’s large and it’s fairly intricate. Smaller breweries were looking to outsource their canning and we wanted to fill it. We’ve grown quickly since launching last year. Chris handles the machine operation and I take care of everything else.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
HA! Is it ever a smooth road when you’re launching a business? We’ve most definitely hit our struggles and found the most supportive clients willing to take a chance with us.

With this business, we’ve joined a community of people with a singular focus… getting great products out to more people. The companies that we partner with have been incredibly supportive and we are so grateful.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Case By Case Canning – what should we know?
We are a husband & wife team, running a mobile beverage canning business… beer, wine, coffee, cocktails, even water! We cater to businesses that want to move into a larger distribution circle but aren’t able to handle the actual canning in-house. Our machine is on wheels and the line breaks down into multiple units to load on to a trailer. We can drive it through the city and even to other states to handle more long-term canning needs.

At the moment, we’re running canning collaborations with Mercenary Canning, a company out of San Luis Obispo. They are helping us maintain our Los Angeles clients while our machine is running six days a week out of state on a long-term contract. We definitely did not foresee this happening so early in our business but have been incredibly proud to see it grow this way.

Ironically enough, we founded Case By Case so Chris could spend less time on the road. There aren’t many options in the area when it comes to this specific service. At the time, there was only one type of mobile machine in Los Angeles and we wanted to bring something different to the market. The machine is the star of the show here, and we wanted to offer the best to our clients. We bought a CODI counter-pressure filler & seamer. It’s the only one of its kind in a smaller mobile platform, providing a counter pressure fill for a premium final product.

We have full control over every part of the fill and seam process, allowing us to work at less than ideal carbonation levels and temperatures. It’s stainless steel, giving us the flexibility to clean at high temperatures and with products that won’t leave a trace of harmful bacteria behind. All that stainless steel, it weighs in at 1300 pounds, it’s heavy as hell.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think our small niche is the beginning of an enormous shift in itself. Cans, until recently, were considered low brow for the craft beer industry. But they bring a longevity and shelf life that bottles just can’t provide. They are airtight and light proof… the two biggest threats to fresh beer.

They’re also lighter, stackable, more affordable and less breakable, making cans the better choice for distribution. And consumers seem to prefer cans over bottles. So, the canning industry is exploding now. Beyond beer, we’re are canning cocktails, wine, and coffee. So, while we initially got into the market for beer, we are quickly expanding into other beverage categories.

As for mobile canning, our business model provides a lot of flexibility for companies, being able to have canning capabilities on hand only when needed. I think there’s a lot to explore there, in how to best provide our services to fill individual needs.
