Meet Chico McGee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chico McGee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chico. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My life has always consisted of good music and good food. I was born in LA and raised in Denver, CO. I wasn’t even allowed to listen to hip hop when I was younger. My father is older so he raised my brother and I on; reggae, Motown, blues, jazz and funk. My mom is from Guatemala, she loves Latin music and the 80s with a passion. That mixture of music helped shape me into the artist I am today. I’ve been writing music for years, it all started with poetry in the 3rd grade. I won a school contest and have been in love with words ever since. I was introduced to rap when I was about ten and that forever changed the game! Poetry on beats??? What could be better than that! Fast forward ten years later and I all about gave up music. I had lost my motivation so I went to engineering to stay as close as possible. Every song I mixed, I wanted a verse on and it became more painful to mix a song with true ears. Throughout the years, I never stopped writing music. Just building a catalog of verses for what I thought was “no reason”. It was the process of my first 10,000 hours.

In 2018, I packed up everything I owned into one car and moved to back to the city I loved. I moved here with nothing to my name but one single goal. I moved to pursue a dream on a whim. Nothing but belief keeping me afloat and stumbled upon Blackwood Studios. While there my passion for music came roaring back and the artistry in me was seen by others. The owners, Sam, Wiss and Jaime, took note and allowed me to pursue writing at the studio which helped tremendously. Chico McGee was reborn. Since then, I’ve been writing music for myself and others, getting interviews and a couple of local radio spins. I’ve dropped two projects, LIGHTSPEED and CHICO, and I’m currently working on some new stuff as well. The love for this craft and the thought that this will one day fund my entire existence keeps me motivated and inspired. I don’t come from much but I understand the blessings hard work and the right mindset can bestow upon you. Like the world, I’m ever-changing and growing so it’s dope to make it to this level but I can’t wait to see what else is in store.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been everything but smooth honestly. I’ve been homeless, put myself in debt and had to put real life before my dreams and aspirations. There’s been plenty of sleepless nights and lost opportunities. However, I truly believe nothing worth keeping is easy to attain. With that at the forefront of my mind, it makes these obstacles more like a game and less of a burden. Every time something happens I say, “that will make an excellent chapter in my book”. It helps keep the balance.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Chico McGee is my brand. I am a music artist and entrepreneur. I am most known for my music as of right now. Depending on when this interview drops, I will also have a second brand, Pinky’s Up. It is a luxury collective. As for right now, I am most proud of starting both brands. The road I traveled and obstacles I faced to make it to this point make every moment a joy. I can’t wait to grow and expand my reach to more people. It would be great to give the blessings I will receive back to those in need.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel like there are three essential qualities one must have for success: authenticity, purpose and diligence. I view it as a three headed dragon, each on their own isn’t enough to get you there but together they create a powerful energy. A person with all 3 of these things in alignment will reach their goals. With or without the help of multiple people. Their sheer willpower will take them there.
