Meet Chiara Garay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chiara Garay.

Hi Chiara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by hair and makeup. Initially, I thought I was going to pursue hairstyling, but I realized it wasn’t for me. Makeup was always on my mind but it took me a while to convince my parents that it can be lucrative. Once I got through to them, I was allowed to start taking clients in my room. I offered to do my friend’s Prom makeup, if we didn’t have plans and we had any sort of makeup around I’d ask them to let me practice. When I got my first few jobs as a teenager, I spent entire paychecks on Makeup to start a kit. I was extremely determined to make it my full time, I kept full-time jobs to have more $ to buy makeup while I was building clientele. Eventually, I got pregnant and I had to make changes, and with that I felt like it was time to go full force with makeup. During pregnancy, I was working at MAC and started going to Esthetician school at night, I took two semesters off to deliver my child, went back finished school, and got my license when my Son was around 10 or 11 months old. I technically stayed home for two years to breastfeed and bond and I would make clients here and there. I sat with myself making blueprint after blueprint and filled up notebooks with my goals and plans to make my dreams my reality. I made sure that I not only set goals but achieved them too, and once I was ready to work full time, I stepped out on faith and been a full-time Makeup Artist for about three years now. I am extremely passionate and determined to make it work, I have to. Anytime I’m happy I want to do makeup, anytime I watch TV, I start researching how to get there, every time I’m sad I “vent” to my brushes and play in makeup until I feel better. Aside from being a Mother, my life revolves around makeup, elevating, and perfecting my craft. Currently, I am traveling quite a bit through California doing makeup for anyone and everyone who has booked me accordingly on my website

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about this journey has been smooth, I have went through phases of hating it, feeling like a failure cause there were times I couldn’t afford bills or literally relied on other people’s support. I have sat on social media and compared myself to other artists and beat myself up about everything, I even deleted my Instagram which has been my main tool to meet clients because I let comparison steal my joy. I got a therapist to help pick me back up and remind me that I am capable. I cried a million times about feeling a little lost because I was choosing which bills to pay on time, but I found faith. I realized that nothing I truly want in this industry will ever come easy, but with the passion and determination that I have, I know this is just the beginning. I put on a brave face every day and I tell myself that no matter who the client is, they’re human like me. I have great days and I have bad days, I even have sick days, but I learned to take the bad with the good because I truly know that I wouldn’t want to do anything else in life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in glam makeup and no-makeup looks. I am definitely most known for my skin application and skin-matching skills. I am most proud that I found my true passion and I trusted myself enough to make it my career. I’m proud that I set my life up to do something I truly love. I would say that my skin matching skills set me apart from others because I am truly comfortable working on any skin type, skin texture, and skin tone. Also, not a lot of makeup artists are licensed estheticians so if ever a client wants her brows waxed before glam, I do that as an add on service as well.

What matters most to you? Why?
I pray a lot, so I would say God and my Son/ family and immediately after I would say happiness, health, and stability. I grew up knowing God so prayer will always be a huge factor. My Son is my entire world. Happiness is something that matters most to me because I genuinely want to be happy, and I deem it very important to know happiness more than grief. Health is important because it’s not only something we need physically but mentally too. I work hard at keeping my mental health at an all time high so I am able to be adaptable to any circumstance. Stability is important because we need money to live off of but also because that ties into mental health and that has always been important to me. I need to show up for me even when no one else does, and it’s important to be able to stand alone sometimes.
