Meet Cheryl Canter-Valesella of Baked it Myself! in San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Canter-Valesella.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Twenty years ago, I baked, packaged and delivered a coconut cake for the writers of ‘FRIENDS’ ordered from my friend and actress on the show. She suggested I start a baking company and call it ‘bakeditmyself’ so when she served our food and her guests like it, she could say ‘bakeditmyself’ and she wasn’t lying.

Without hesitation, I quit my successful fashion career to become a woman entrepreneur and created Baked it Myself! a full service catering company. Bar/beverage, cocktail parties, plated dinners, events up to 3000 guests. Our attention to detail, professional staff, delicious menus have built a loyal clientele ranges from Hollywood Studios, Corporate clients, Universities, Medical Industry, Private Clientele.

Baked it Myself! Cafe was opened in 2008 and is located in our contemporary commercial kitchen space in Van Nuys, CA. offering a healthy faire of salads, sandwiches and daily specials.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were many days when the phone didn’t ring but I showed up to work everyday and made cold calls to increase sales, handled the production, did many tasks by myself and said yes to every order that came in for cash flow purposes and to get the Baked it Myself name out there.

The food industry has added business stresses to adhere by… health dept. codes and visits, special handling procedures, special equipment etc. Continuous training and educating to our staff.

Oh this was good. We had a 24 ft. refrigerator truck packed down with prepared food ready to pull out for an event when the refrigeration unit broke. We had to find a replacement truck on a Saturday in sunny LA within two hours and transfer all contents and be on the road to make it to the event on time. That was a close call and super stressful but we did it!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Baked it Myself! story. Tell us more about the business.
Baked it Myself! is a boutique – turnkey catering company.

Our clients send us the event info and we hit the ground running with creative menus, florals, staffing, beverages, entertainment and whatever they need to make it a memorable event. We will even go into a home and add details to their existing decor, lighting, invite lists etc. to take away tasks allowing the client to enjoy their party.

Because we cater many film screenings we are known to create themed menus across the globe. Greek food, Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, South of the border etc. depending on the film location and content.

It makes me happy that our clients are still hiring us after 20 years and many have become dear friends.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good fortune comes to my life and business precisely at the right time.

There are many times I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel and then out of nowhere a miracle drops into my business. Yes, it continues to happen today and I trust this blind faith.
