Meet Chenhung Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chenhung Chen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In my work I am completely involved with line, having first recognized its power in Nature, Chinese calligraphy and painting, and later in American Abstract Expressionism. Through the use of line, I am able to express feelings of delicacy, power, buoyancy, strength and constant motion.

Please tell us about your art.
In my current project, I crochet electrical wire and components into a fabric like shape and combine readymade objects to make sculpture and/or instillation. The original function of my materials was to harness electricity and transform its potential, bending it to the will of man. This function has always fascinated me and so I have utilized these man-made materials to create. The inspiration came primarily from Chinese philosophy and culture.

My art is about dichotomy: concord and dissonance, order and chaos, the subtle and the powerful. From these dichotomies works are formed that deal with balance, the making of the invisible into the visible and man’s unstoppable nature; the driving force that is bringing about this informational age. The underlining tension in my work deals with the notion that even with all this technology, man still has to grapple with the consequences of his human condition.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
