Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsie Overocker.
Chelsie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Five years ago, I decided to make the move to Southern California for a fresh start after graduating College. I packed as much of my belongings that would fit in my Scion TC. I left my apartment in Denver, Colorado and drove off to the West Coast jamming to Taylor Swift.
This is one of the few times I didn’t know where my life was going to take me but at 23, I knew my chapter in Denver was ending and it was time for my path to go into a different direction. With all journeys, there are times where you on rocky roads and the speed bumps that came across my path, I hit them hard. But I will never regret those challenging times I faced because in those moments, that’s when I learned the most about myself. I learned to speak up and use my voice while making difficult decisions. I learned who was there for me as a friend. But most importantly, I started finding which direction my life was taking me. My first year in CA was probably the hardest and the only outlet I had was creating content. There was a coffee shop that was right across my apartment in Huntington Beach and as soon as I got off of work, I would go there every night and write until they closed.
At the time, I didn’t expect it to turn into anything but it was something that made me feel good about myself. I felt more fulfilled writing than working my 8 hour corporate job where I was getting paid. I soon started meeting people from LA who were involved in the entertainment industry. When I wasn’t working my full time job I would drive to LA and do side gigs. Some were commercials and others we’re interviewing up and coming artists. One night I was out having drinks with a good friend who does a lot of hosting on camera and also works behind the scenes. She told me I should audition to become a host for AfterBuzz TV and I would learn a lot with what the company has to offer. After a few months, I was accepted as a host and that’s where another new chapter begins again. I remember my first day, founder of AfterBuzz TV, Keven Undergaro spoke to the new host saying, “If you aren’t growing you are dying.” After hosting my first after show I had the same feeling from when I was writing back at the small coffee shop in Huntington Beach. I felt fulfilled and Keven’s words hit me. The more I continued to work on my craft the more I felt my purpose. I was still commuting from OC to LA so I picked two days out of the week where I could drive up to LA and I hosted as many after shows I could when I was at AfterBuzz. I would get there in the afternoon and stay sometimes until 11 at night. The beginning of 2020, I was facing another set of speed bumps in my path and was feeling lost. Keven sat down with me and encouraged me to start writing articles for AfterBuzz.
Soon after that’s when Covid-19 started and that was another speed bump I faced. My full-time job closed down for a month and I was quarantined in my apartment. But I quickly turned my attitude around and knew this was the perfect time to still continue my craft. Every week I would set goals for myself on what I needed to accomplish and slowly my confidence started coming back. Not only was I hosting my shows remotely but I would make it a goal to write at least seven articles a week about my favorite stars and TV networks. Within a few weeks, my articles started getting recognized and soon, I was given the opportunity to not only interview these stars but write exclusives about their upcoming movies. After a month, Covid-19 wasn’t getting better in CA and the company I was working for full time was making changes that affected my position. But what I learned is behind every speed bump there is a blessing. Keven and Maria Menounos offered me a position with AfterBuzz and this is the most I’ve ever learned. Not only am I still growing but I have two of the best people I’ve ever met mentoring me. I will always be paving the path with my journey but you have to embrace those speed bumps when they hit you because something better will always come out in the end…trust me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth but those obstacles you face is what makes you grow as a person. Anything that’s important to you will always be worth the fight. As soon as I moved to California, I had a hard time adjusting and was wondering if this was where I should be. I remember sitting on the bathroom floor talking with my mom and telling her maybe I should come back to Denver. She told me, “no you are not coming back. I told you this wasn’t going to be easy. You’re not going backwards. Just give it some time, everything doesn’t come together right away but I do believe in you.” I know everyone says that they have the best mom but I got the jackpot. From there that’s when I started discovering my passion for hosting and writing. Along my journey, I faced a struggle with MDDS which stands for Mal de Debarquement Syndrome.
The main symptom of MDDS is having the constant sensation that your body is moving even when you are still. I came down with this right when I started hosting at AfterBuzz TV a year ago. There were so many days when I was in the studio hosting on air and I didn’t feel good. But I knew this was a speed bump that I was going to overcome and when I started doubting that I had some really good friends who lifted me up again. The people who are there for you during your worst times, hang onto them. I am very fortunate to no longer have symptoms of MDDS and overcome it. 2019 for me personally was the hardest year I had to face but what I’ve learned is if I could get through those difficult days, I know I can get through anything.
Please tell us about AfterBuzz TV.
AfterBuzz TV is an online broadcasting network founded by Keven Undergaro and Maria Menounos. We cover news entertainment and specialized in after-show podcasts. The hosts would talk about the show and state their thoughts, and opinions. We also have Spotlight On’s where our hosts have in-depth interviews with stars and showrunners. AfterBuzz TV also has a strong editorial section where our writers are covering the latest news in entertainment.
I am known as a host and writer but recently just started producing shows and editing our articles for the company. It’s great to not only be in front of the camera but learn everything behind the scenes as well. I think what’s great about my position is that I am always learning every day.
AfterBuzz TV was created to help up and coming host who wanted to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. You receive content while given the opportunity to build relationships with people in the entertainment industry through booking guests and the seminars that Keven and Maria host a couple of times a year. What makes us stand out from any other news outlet is we are an artists friendly platform and want to cover stories that highlight stars.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
No, because every lesson I had to learn made me who I am today. If I never experienced the hard times in life then I wouldn’t have the opportunity to build upon that. The building blocks is what make us stronger in life. I think everything happens for a reason and I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
