Meet Charmain Chen of Emblem Flowers in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charmain Chen.

Charmain, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started six years ago when I designed a mason jar of flowers and brought it to a small, upscale gift shop in Pasadena. I asked the owner whether or not she would like to host a Mother’s day flower pop up shop in her store. She said yes and that’s how Emblem got started.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Early on, in order to not burn out as an event florist where I am the principal artist, I had to intentionally slow down the growth of my business at a sustainable pace for myself and my family. As a result, the business has grown at a slower pace than my peers in the industry, and of course that has ramifications on revenue and on my brand. I would have to remind myself first things first…relationships in my life come first, and I want my business to make it in the long haul. I’m growing at the speed of my own pace.

Emblem Flowers – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a Los Angeles floral designer and I specialize in floral design for upscale weddings and events. I’m most proud of providing our clients and their planners with a highly customized experience, meticulous care and a strong intuitive approach to design. We strive to create pieces that best reflect the subtleties of who our clients are and what they most love.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a client fully satisfied and a project that brings me joy.
