Meet Charlie Ezekiel Kerbel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Ezekiel Kerbel.

Hi Charlie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a fashion designer by day but have always been the type of person who can’t sit still. I have two little kids that go to sleep early, so when the pandemic hit, my husband and I found ourselves with no commitments in the evenings. We could not bear just sitting around watching Netflix. I grew up in South Africa, and my best friend who still lives there, Michelle Duwe, had started a grazing box company ME’N’U Grazing. ME’N’U Grazing boxes are individually customized Charcuterie boxes that are sent as gifts or enjoyed at parties, and they’re especially great right now because they can come in individual sizes. So one night I jolted out of bed with the idea that I NEEDED to bring ME’N’U Grazing to LA. I’m a creative person, who loves food, entertaining and hanging out with loved ones, and these grazing boxes allow me not only to use my creative energy making them. I get to bring food, joy and a shared experience to my clients. I learned that in fashion, nothing is more exclusive than custom branded items, so I wanted to make sure that each customer’s box gets a custom cookie to really give a meaningful, unique experience. And because food and eating is so personal, I work with each client on a very hands-on basis to make sure they are getting really customized grazing boxes to add that extra element of personalization.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new business is never exactly easy, but this has truly been an incredible learning experience for me. I’ve enjoyed so much community support, and have gotten to work with really inspiring people – especially other women entrepreneurs – along the way. One of my biggest challenges was learning to navigate the food industry; learning how to plan for bulk orders and not having tons of wastage. I realized if I applied my apparel manufacturing experience and just pivoted this towards food , I could plan steps ahead and foresee potential issues. I also know that developing lasting relationships with manufacturers is a key element of success.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My individualized grazing boxes are unique to each customer, and I make a variety of sized boxes for sharing. I also make specialty boxes for every holiday – Easter, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years – you name it. And they each have their own flair coupled with a personalized element for each client. With more than 20 years in the fashion industry, I understand how important aesthetics are, so I really try to make these boxes beautiful and delicious. During Covid, it’s been difficult to share food, so my individual boxes have been a real hit. They’ve been particularly great for social distancing events, especially kids’ birthday parties. My clients have also found that sending any sized box as a gift to someone, has been a great way to connect with friends and loved ones who they’re otherwise not seeing because of the pandemic. You might not be able to break bread together right now, but at least you can send someone something delicious they can eat out of a pretty box!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Hardworking, organized, being able to prioritize and juggle. I also believe being kind and authentic is incredibly important and allows you to break down barriers and connect with people. Having the ability to really listen to what your client wants and needs without pushing your own opinions and agenda is key too. I also think being able to admit you don’t know everything and reaching out to your network and asking for help is really important.
