Meet Charles Lan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Lan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Charles. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Three years ago, I wanted to pick up a more serious hobby and meet new friends. I decided on photography because I had a camera that was sitting on my shelf collecting dust. From there, I went to my first convention and got hooked on taking portraits of characters from my favorite anime and manga. Time passed by quickly and the experience and people I met were so warm. I never had so much fun doing something for so long and wanted to give it a shot as a profession.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. There’s very little money in the cosplay industry for photography as a service. As far as I’ve researched, there are only a handful of people making a modest living producing cosplay photography without the support of their family. That being said, I knew that getting into this, while it hasn’t been smooth I enjoy the challenge trying to prove myself in a new and growing field.

Please tell us about Charles Lan Photography.
My vision is to bring storytelling and fine art to cosplay photography, I want to tell a powerful story with a single photo. I’m proud that I have the opportunity to bring my clients and friends creations to life and draw their audience into the world of the character they’re portraying. If I were to pick one aspect that sets me apart from my peers, it’s channeling atmosphere and mood into my photography.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Ah, I’m not sure there’s anything in particular to be honest. I do remember spending a lot of time playing RPGs. Probably my best times were when all of my friends would bring over our computers to one of our houses and host LAN parties for a weekend. We’d sleep very little and play Starcraft and Counter-Strike all night.
