Meet Charisse Curtis of Milano Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisse Curtis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my PR career in New York, NY where I attended college at St. John’s University. I studied PR there and had tons of internships in Manhattan including working at The Rachael Ray Show! After graduation, I decided to move to Miami where I got my first ever PR job working with fashion clients and doing lots of events on Miami Beach.

After two years in Miami, I realized I couldn’t see myself growing there professionally any longer. At this point, I had a big decision to make…to move back to New York or to move to Los Angeles the two biggest cities in the country for my profession. Newly accustom to the South Florida weather it made the decision to move to LA that much easier.

Six years in Los Angeles, many pr agencies later, tons of events in the books… I finally decided to start my own PR consulting firm. Milano Consulting started from the need to separate from the typical agency life that many publicists can attest to. With eight years of notable PR experience under my belt, it just felt like the perfect time to start this new chapter in my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
Is there such thing as a smooth road? It definitely has been an unforgettable road, to say the least. I have worked at some big name agencies and some very small agencies but what I was able to take away from each experience has truly shaped me into the publicist I am today.

The funny thing is that in PR sometimes it’s just not about PR. I actually got fired from one of the agencies I worked at primarily because my boss didn’t like me for reasons that had nothing to do with my work. Most agencies that I have worked at our primarily women, so with that being said sometimes these environments can be caty to put it lightly!

Also, being a woman of color has been interesting. I wouldn’t ever say it has been a “struggle,” but sometimes that relate-ability factor that is missing at an agency proves how much of a necessity you are.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Milano Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.
Milano Consulting is a unique remote PR consulting firm with a national reach. We specialize in supporting the brand name + reputation of individual brands and companies that have a serious interest in cultivating their businesses through the media, strategic brand partnerships, organic event engagement and so much more!

I am most proud of the versatility of my company. From sports clients to jewelry clients — the range of publications we get clients into is so diverse.

What sets us apart from other companies is that we do what we say. There isn’t any fluff around what we have going on. We get our clients PRESS! When people think about PR, they think marketing, advertising, influencers, etc. and that is all fine and good, but as a publicist, my one main job is to secure quality placements that speak on high levels for each client.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?  Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I honestly can not imagine where the PR industry will go in the next 5-10 years. It has changed so much since I entered into college learning how to write the perfect press release to now 2018 where press releases are something of the past. I love working with younger publicists and college interns because they are honestly on top of all the trends and keep me young and fresh in this industry.
