Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Landers.
Chad, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in Kinesiology, and spending a few years working in both commercial health clubs and spas in Illinois and Las Vegas, I moved to Los Angeles 1993 to take a job as a personal trainer at a private gym in Sherman Oaks.
In 1995, I went out on my own, training clients out of Gold’s Gym in North Hollywood, which lasted for nearly 8 years.
Finally, in 2003, I was able to open up my own private personal training studio, PUSH Private Fitness, in Toluca Lake. For the past 14 years, my team and I have been able to create a fun and supportive environment, where both clients and trainers alike can thrive.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, I was the only trainer at PUSH. There was a bit of the old “Field of Dream’s” “build it and they will come” mentality. Fortunately, I was right. I chose a great location on Riverside Drive and from the beginning had a precise idea of the type of company culture I wanted to create and that I thought was lacking in the commercial gym setting.
Things grew slowly, but steadily until late 2008/early 2009, when the Recession finally took a bite out of my business and I retracted about 25-30%. Fortunately, I’d grown is enough in those first 5 years that I was able to weather the storm and continue on to this day, bigger and better than ever.
Staffing was an early issue as well. It takes time to put the right team together, and I chose wrongly on a few occasions and had to get rid of certain individuals that weren’t a good fit. But those growing pains are long behind us, and I feel very fortunate to have a great team of people working at PUSH.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PUSH Private Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a private, personal training only facility. We do not have memberships or classes, strictly one-on-one training. All our sessions are by appointment only and last about an hour.
We believe that strength training is the foundation of any good fitness program, including for those that desiring fat loss! So, we combine proper resistance training, interval cardio training, and nutrition modification to help our clients reach their health and fitness goals (even if the goal is simply to look great naked!)
What sets us apart is our people, and our experience. I’ve personally been in the fitness industry for 30 years, and have multiple members of my team who’ve been in the game 15-20 years and more. We’ve been through it all, we’ve seen it all, and we know what works and what is just the latest fad.
I’m exceptionally proud of our trainers and the care they give each and every client. I’m also proud of my team’s philanthropic nature…from clothing drives to donating blood to volunteering at Children’s Hospital L.A., we strive to give back to the community whenever we can.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, I think the fitness industry will continue the trend away from impersonal, “big box” gyms as it has over the last few years. People will continue to seek out facilities that create an experience that can take the often-mundane process of working out and make it fun and something they look forward to doing.
I believe we will see a huge growth in exercise for the elderly, as the baby boomer generation continues into retirement. Fitness facilities, and especially staff will need more education in working with the unique challenges of an aging clientele.
Lastly, I think a big challenge will be getting “buy in” from the Millennial generation. Many of these people grew up at a time when Physical Education was no longer offered in school, and where free time was spent on a gaming console, rather than playing physical games and sports. The industry will need to figure out how to make health and fitness a priority for these future clients.
