Meet Catherine Porter and Valeria Garza of Herbin Ladies in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Porter and Valeria Garza.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A year ago one of my BFF’s came to me with a brilliant idea for a business. We’d been talking for years about options for a small business, but had no idea of what we could do or make, or what services we could provide that would be different and set us apart from everything that’s out there in the world already. Something that could utilize both of our years of experience; my years of experience in Fine Art, Administration, Operations, Logistics, Distribution, Advertising and Production and Valeria’s years of experience in Executive Sales, Merchandising, Marketing and Production and Art.

Valeria posed the idea of doing something related to Cannabis. We both being cannabis advocates I was instantly intrigued… Valeria is always on the lookout for the next “thing” and she suggested we could start making water pipes…for women.

As soon as she said it, I liked the idea! Having been a cannabis advocate since my early teens, I was very aware of the lack of cannabis products geared towards women: most water pipes and paraphernalia are geared towards men. The cannabis industry as a whole has been a male-dominated industry. Now, with the cannabis laws changing, especially in California where we live, we knew this would be the perfect time to start this venture! Valeria’s added brilliant idea of re-purposing vintage vases, decanters, and other vessels into water pipes was exactly the edge we needed to set us apart from everyone else in the industry. Finally, a lady can partake in cannabis in style, elegance, and femininity!

In the process of starting this business, doing research, and talking to other woman in cannabis, it also became glaringly obvious that we as women don’t have much of a voice in the cannabis industry, and I knew that needed to change. And we were just the women change it!

We had a vision of how we could use this business to give women a voice in cannabis, that if we banned together, we could build a community of women who partake or use cannabis for a myriad of different reasons from anxiety to pain management- a safe place, a forum of like female minds to come together and share their experiences, their knowledge, information and their support to end the negative stigma attached to cannabis use. So many women I know in the community; mothers, teachers, nurses, professionals of all sorts, use cannabis! It’s time we stop sneaking around and feeling ashamed of using cannabis! We are not stoners and potheads sitting around getting high, we are YOUR community! We believe we can in time, change the negative attitude towards cannabis.

All of that coupled with really fun, bold merchandise, practical paraphernalia and a collaborative mode d’employ- Herbin Ladies was born!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Lol….is there such thing as a smooth road in starting a business? Actually, we’ve been extremely blessed with professional women in the cannabis lifestyle who’ve given us direction, ideas, feedback and support. We’ve been growing very slowly so we can build our brand the right way, the way we want it. Everyday and almost everything we do is a learning experience. Even though so many aspects of our business is work we’re very familiar and comfortable with, it’s different when it’s Your business, but also very exciting! We have ideas and some of them pan out but some of them don’t, you have to be flexible and roll with the punches….if we can’t do something one way, we go to Plan B!

Herbin Ladies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in water pipes and cannabis paraphernalia for WOMEN!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Hmmm….the proudest moment so far? Just doing it. Taking that leap of faith. Being scared and unsure if this business is going to grow, but pushing on and persevering anyway. Also, seeing how able I am to do things I never thought I could do! And in some cases, didn’t know how to do at all! But saying “fxck it” let’s do it!!
