Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefanie Villers.
Stefanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I was that friend taking photos – on disposables, on whatever new digital camera that came out. Wherever we went, my friends knew I’d take care of documenting whatever we were up to.
After moving out to LA four years ago, I rediscovered a passion and interest in photography on a more ‘professional level’ and bought my first (used) DSLR camera, which I still own/use.
I started shooting photos for work purposes and from there I got more into lifestyle and adventure… I started acquiring business through word of mouth and right now I am taking some time to figure out what it really is that I love to shoot. It’s so much trial and error for me.
I love shooting with natural light, sun flares, food and tons of adventure.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth? No. I took a photography class back in high school but haven’t had any professional training so it’s just trial and error for me and I learn as I go. I’ll have a whole vision for something and after I’ve finished shooting and editing, I won’t be into it anymore. It’s a constant mental and creative struggle. Working on your craft, your passion takes time and unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of patience so for me, I’ve had this idea in my mind of where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do by now and I’m must just not there.
Please tell us about Catching Cali Photo.
I’m a passion photographer. I specialize in shooting landscapes, adventure photography and lifestyle portraits. I love working with natural light, I love sun flares, I love line, I love shooting things that bring me joy.
These last couple of years, I have gotten into lifestyle portraits but I’m slowly realizing that it doesn’t bring me joy. I’ve had numerous clients reach out to me in the last six months and I had to make a decision to not take them on. I wanted to take time to explore what it is that I LOVE to shoot. I’m proud of that. But I do have friends that I will still shoot and when they love their photos and it makes them feel good, that makes me feel good, makes me feel proud.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I could sit here and list off a million and one things I would want to have done different but really, I wouldn’t want to undo any of my failures. My failures have shaped and molded me the most.
