Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Parks.
Cat, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Los Angeles to further my career in the music and modeling industry.
Once I moved here, I noticed how there was such a need for community. A lot of women feel alone. Los Angeles is one of the biggest cities in the world so I decided to do something about that. I started hosting small workshops and events.
I started GrlPwrLA Almost a year ago and it blows me away! It began as a small online Facebook community and we now have close to 1,000 members. I didn’t expect to not have to market the events but it goes to show when you fulfill a need anything is possible.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest struggles starting off was not having a team. There is a lot that goes into successfully starting and launching a non-profit. Now, GrlPwrLA has provided me the opportunities to meet and connect with some of the most brilliant and beautiful hearted women I have ever met. Now that we have a team GrlPwrLA is expanding thanks to the network of women and resources this community offers so we can further our mission.
Please tell us about GrlPwrLA. What are you most proud of?
GrlPwrLA is now an official 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization geared towards helping women maintain a sense of community while fostering self-love and respect.
We do this by providing monthly meetups and workshops in intimate settings with powerful topics and conversations.
I’m most proud of our authenticity. Someone once told me that they lived in LA 15 years and they’ve never felt the love from a community like this. It’s that authenticity that sets us apart. The genuine relationships that you form in our community. I’m so grateful for that. I am also most proud of our community outreach initiatives! We provide monthly volunteer opportunities and GrlPwrLA recently raised enough funds to deliver 100 + self care bags filled with essential items along with food to help those in need on Skid row. Being able to utilize the community I’ve built to give back fulfills me in such a special way.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over at first, I was going to say there’s nothing I would do differently but you know what if I could do one thing differently, it would be being more consistent. We have accomplished so much in the past year from growing a community in nine months to establishing our 501(c)(3) and becoming a nonprofit organization. This once vision is now a reality. I postponed doing a lot of things in the past as a result of fear. Once I overcame that, I was able to reach my goals like establishing a nonprofit. Now that we have this milestone completed, it will be much easier to remain consistent in accomplishing our future goals.
