Meet Cassy Velazquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassy Velazquez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cassy. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Do you remember that TV show “Out of this World” back in the early ’90s where the girl was able to pause and un-pause time? I was obsessed with that concept, and I discovered that the closest thing I can get to pausing reality and time is photography. I studied photography in school, but my path took me down a more stable career until I caught the entrepreneurial bug in 2013.

After co-founding and failing at several ventures, I realized I needed to pursue something that I was wildly passionate about. I went back to my obsession with “freezing” moments and “snapping” stories. I began professionally photographing couples and weddings shortly after my own wedding in 2017, and I have love documenting every love story ever since!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think behind every success; there is a series of struggle that people often don’t realize. But if you didn’t struggle, can you really feel accomplished? I didn’t have any mentors when I started out, so I was learning everything by myself. It was sometimes a lonely journey, but I was lucky to have close friends and family to support me.

I found myself completely absorbed in the learning process, which comprised of watching so many videos, reading tons of blogs and attending educational classes on the technical side of photography. I was asking ridiculously dumb questions on photography forums and being unabashed about finding the first client. It also meant doing a lot of unpaid jobs to get the experience I needed to take me to the next level.

Luckily, the photography community is amazing, and I was able to make many creative friends who were also on their own journey.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Cassy Velazquez Photography is my passion project! You can’t tell from reading this behind a screen, but I am grinning ear to ear just talking about this special little company of mine. And that’s what you’ll find when you talk to me because I get so excited just thinking about the opportunities and the little fleeting moments that I get to witness and capture.

I mainly specialize in wedding photography, but I’m open to all kinds of lifestyle photography. I’d like to say I’m known for my infectious positivism and candids that often show up on photographs. I care a lot about my clients and their day, I feel it’s not just my job to take pictures, it’s my job to always deliver memories of their lives that they can look back and smile about.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me means three things: never to set an alarm clock, to not have a routine day, and to be able to afford something for my friends and family without worrying about the consequences. Let me clarify the last one a little bit.

Affording something could be time or object. So for me, a successful person could afford to take a few hours out of their life to spend it with someone without worrying about any consequences. Similarly, a successful person can also afford an out of state college tuition for their children without breaking the bank!
