Meet Cassandra Scotto of Nutrition by Cass in Marina Del Rey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Scotto.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in a small town right outside of Hershey, PA. When I was just six months old, I moved to Italy with my grandmother and came back to the US when I was six years old. I remember walking into kindergarten like it was yesterday. Moving to the US was very challenging and traumatizing for me. My brother and I were bullied for being Italian all the way through high school. I used to hate that I was Italian and that English was my second language. I struggled expressing myself and would hold back from speaking a lot, but now that I am older I am so grateful for many reasons and fully embrace everything about my culture!

After graduating from La Salle University with a Nutrition degree in 2016, I moved back to that small little town. The day I got home, I knew in my heart that I was meant for more and wouldn’t be there for long. Making California home was a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I was determined to make that dream reality and that’s exactly what I did.

I had my one way ticket to Los Angeles for March 20, 2017 and since I’ve been here, I haven’t looked back. This month marks three years.. wow I still can’t believe it! Moving across the country on my own has been the scariest but best decision I’ve ever made. My first year here was a whirlwind but I was able to get on my feet. For the first few months, I lived in a small studio with a friend I made at Gold’s Gym Venice when I visited for the first time. I did everything I could to get on my feet and start building my dream life. My first year here, I went through a handful of jobs. Nothing felt satisfying or fulfilling but I had to pay my bills so I did what I had to do. Very early mornings and hours of LA traffic were part of the daily routine. Thinking about all the things I did just to get by and somewhat on my feet that first year still gives me chills. Thanks Dad for being my rock. I’ll never forget the endless phone calls and support! Wouldn’t be here and who I am without you!

Towards the end of my first year here, I had finally landed a job that allowed some flexibility to do my own thing. I was working as a nutrition coordinator for a holistic doctor. My position started off working from the office in Studio City, which was a 2-hour commute every day. Sometimes even more, but we were able to come to a mutual agreement that the position could be remote. Once I was working from home, I had more time and I structured myself so well with scheduling that I was able to start my own work on the side.

I still remember the day I “launched” my business- Nutrition by Cass! Being an entrepreneur has not been easy to say the least. There have been SO many ups and downs. I started off in the nutrition and fitness coaching space and now my business fully focuses on all things nutrition. I am an online nutrition coach and private chef in the Los Angeles County area! All of my services focus on a whole foods approach. I’m all about quality when it comes to our bodies and health.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like I mentioned, being an entrepreneur has not been easy! I think the hardest part for me when I first started was going from complete financially stability to the roller coaster life. It was really scary and even still is really scary because weeks and months can look very different in all aspects. Living in such an expensive place makes it that much harder! I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve called my dad bawling my eyes out wanting to give up. Somehow though I always find the strength in me to keep going and make it work. I think this really has to do with my purpose and passion!

Please tell us about Nutrition by Cass.
I am a Nutritionist! I graduated from La Salle University’s four years program in 2016. I work online as a nutrition coach and I am also a private chef in the Los Angeles County area, where I offer in home meal services and meal prep delivery! My goal is to show people that healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. Healthy food can taste good I promise! I can help you eat your favorite meals by swapping out lesser quality ingredients with high-quality stuff! It really is so simple to execute this lifestyle once you know what works for you! I think what I am most proud of is the fact that I haven’t given up. I am still standing and living out my dream one day at a time despite all the times I’ve questioned myself and going back to a normal 9-5.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
If I could give all credit to one person, it would be my dad. I truly would not be in the position I am today without him. He has been there every step of the way in all aspects. I always ask myself how I got so lucky to have someone that is so supportive and understanding! I also definitely need to give credit to my friends out here. When you move somewhere on your own without family it can be really hard at times. The people closest to you become your family. The connections I’ve made with people out here are different… you know who you are… thank you!
