Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Cramer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carrie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I wasn’t a crazy dog lady until I got Atticus. He was a gift from an ex just weeks before a messy separation. Every morning for a few months, I forced myself to get up, walk the dog, and try to be upbeat and positive for my new puppy. Years later, I am the happiest I’ve ever been, and I couldn’t have done it without Atticus. Dogs have that power to make everyone around them radiate, and that’s exactly what I hope my debut line of necklaces will do—make women shine.
Basically I am a costume designer/wardrobe stylist and have been in the industry for 18 years. I started this as a side project because I wanted a fine piece of jewelry that represented my dog. I couldn’t fine one, so I made one for myself and decided if I like wearing this, then other people may also! I sell directly through my website all over the world. I think people find me mainly through Instagram and word of mouth, but the more people that can know what I do, the better. My favorite pieces to make are custom pieces that look exactly like your pet, those are fun and they mean a lot to my clients. I hope to continue to bring joy through my pieces to other animal and jewelry lovers, like myself.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I am coming from an industry where we share all of our knowledge, contacts, suppliers, etc. to get what we need done and fast. The TV world can be small and I have a great community of other costume designers and costumers who all help each other out.
The jewelry business is not at all like that.
I couldn’t get any information on where to buy chain, clasps, what jewelers can do custom pieces and not want to make 1000 at a time. I have been through a lot of jewers and I finally feel like I have the right team behind me that can help me get these pieces made and are willing to work with me to grow my line.
That has been the hardest part because I need someone I can trust to fabricate these pieces and do it in a timely and cost-effective way.
I also learned a lot about marketing and different website platforms and how to get the word out. Luckily I had a lot of friends who really helped with marketing and media. It’s just a battle to get the word out, so people know my line exists.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Carrie Cramer Fine Jewelry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Carrie Cramer Fine Jewelry is a small jewelry company that sells directly to the consumer online, there is no retail mark-up. I specialize in fine jewelry inspired by your pet, I have 30 different dog breeds on my website along with a cat, horse and a unicorn. All of these shapes come in 14k yellow, white and rose gold necklaces, charms, earrings, rings and bracelets. I do have a few sterling and gold plated options and I am working on keychains…for the fellas.
My specialty is custom pieces of your pet, I just need a side photo of your pet and my graphic designer creates the shape. It then goes back for approval and we can tweak the head, tale, ears, etc. Once it has been approved, it goes to my laser cutter, who cuts the exact shape into the metal of your choice, along with a diamond collar and engraving to really make the piece special and sparkle. This can be made into a pendant, charm, bracelet, earring or mini pendant. I am most proud of the happiness that my pieces bring people and I love getting emails from my clients about how happy their piece has made them. It really makes me elated to read that a piece of jewelry I have made can have a really positive impact on someone. I think that is what also sets me apart from other jewelry companies, mine deals directly with the love of our little fur babies.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I can’t stress enough how much I am in love with Los Angeles. I fell in love with this city when I was going to USC in the 90’s and then once I started working in the entertainment industry, I was hooked. This is my place and I feel so lucky to be able to live here. I know how to get around all of LA, I had to learn from maps. I lived in the West Hollywood/Mid City area of LA for almost 20 years. I then met my husband at the ripe young age of 40 and moved to Hermosa Beach. He is a surfer and needed to be closer to the water. I was really hesitant to make the move, but after spending many weekends in the South Bay, I kinda fell in love. My dog also loves it here and honestly that’s whats most important. So I made the move so my two guys can be close to the water and I can experience a different part of the city. I do drive up to my old hood though to shop for my private clients and I work on a TV show called Tosh.0. I have been Daniel Tosh’s costume designer going on 12 years now. The thing I like least about LA is the traffic, I am now in it driving back up to the city, where I used to be in the heart of it. It’s worth it though, I get my city fix then drive home to watch the sunset on the Pacific with my schnauzer. What could be better than that.
