Meet Carolina Munhóz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Munhóz.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a 30-year-old journalist, screenwriter, YA fantasy writer, and influencer. I was born in Brazil, but currently, I live in Los Angeles for the past three years with my husband (the bestseller writer and screenwriter Raphael Draccon) by an EB-1 Green Card as “Aliens of Extraordinary Abilities.”

I won the Brazilian Youth Award as “Best Brazilian Young Writer” and by Vox Populi the “Author’s Category” on the Shorty Awards Ceremony in NY. In my career, I had articles and interviews published in all of Brazil’s major media outlets and sold over 300 thousand copies. Later, I signed a six-figure deal with Rocco publishing company and with Rede Globo (Brazil’s main TV network) as a screenwriter.

I also worked with Sony Latin America, and now I have a Netflix Original TV series with my husband where we sign all the episodes, and we are executive producers: The Chosen One (O Escolhido) that is coming out this year in all countries. Besides my books (ten published in Brazil) and scripts, I work as an influencer on Instagram and Twitter.

I have more than 150 thousand followers and 250 fan clubs. I already worked in Brazil and in the US with more than 200 brands like Cover Girl, Dior, Trophy Skin, Oscar de La Renta, Nicole Lee, Nyx Cosmetics, Babor, Cylo, Lancome, Michael Toddy, Dermalogica, Miraval Provence and others.

Has it been a smooth road?
I was the first Brazilian female author to become a best-seller in the fantasy genre.

Coming from a broken home and suffering in the past with depression, I had to fight to get to where I am right now. Books, movies and tv shows where not part of my childhood and early teen years. I had to find that world by myself when characters became my friends since I was bullied a lot in school.

Against all odds, not being from a big city, I was able to grab the attention from Brazil’s media and public, and now I became one of the first Brazilian screenwriters to have an Original show with Netflix.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I write. That can be books, movies or TV shows. Nowadays I’m focused on finishing my work with Netflix where I have an Original TV Series.

I’m known for writing fantasy pieces, but I also write Thrillers, nerd comedies, and young adult content.

What sets me apart is that my Brazilian background gives me the background to insert passion and obstacles to my writing that can add to a global market audience.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I love Los Angeles because it is a city that breathes entertainment. It is truly the best place to be when you are a screenwriter.

I love how similar it is to Rio de Janeiro, my husband’s hometown, where we used to live before coming here. And for now, I love everything. Even the traffic! (we have the worst one in Brazil)
