Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina McGilvra.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since sharing our story with Voyage LA back in October of last year, Creative Steps (an Aurelia Foundation Program) has made tremendous progress. We have officially established three locations in Los Angeles with our newest location in the South Bay area. We work closely everyday within our all our home communities to offer an individualized program for each individual with moderate to severe disabilities. We’ve create a safe place where these individuals can continue to grow and thrive and learn the necessary skills for greater independence and community engagement.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of our biggest challenges is finding work, volunteer opportunities and social activities for our clients within their home communities. We consistently are looking for business to partner up with. Fundraising is also a continuous challenge and finding way of spreading our mission to a wider public. We have an incredible group of supporters and with their assistance, we are able to spread our mission in our home communities and by using social media, newsletters and our newly relaunched website to express our mission to a wider public.
Creative Steps – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
On October 20th, 2018, we are hosting our 5th Annual Gala where we raise most of the funds that allow our program to continue to run and grow each year. Last year was a huge success raising over $100,000. Those funds allow us to provide our clients art classes held at Pepperdine University, recreation activities at the YMCA, internships at Shemesh Farms in Malibu and multiple other excursions and activities. This year, our goal is $200,000 and we’re confident that we’ll accomplish this!
