Meet Carlynne Epstein of Wicked Hair & Makeup Artistry in Venice Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlynne Epstein.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carlynne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up with an ex-super model as a Mother, and an entrepreneur as a Father I was always captivated by anything related to beauty, fashion, and having freedom to do my own thing. I decided to take on the beauty industry right out of high school and never looked back. Now, after 14 years, my professional journey has been anything but ordinary. My portfolio of work has ranged everywhere from weddings, set work, salon and educational work. After working for MAC for many years, I became a product specialist and artist trainer and developer. That experience really opened my eyes to not only how we should approach dealing with clients who are many times in a fragile state when they come to us, but also what really goes into the products and companies that we support by using them. Since that point I always knew I wanted to open my own space one day, and that I would do things differently.

Has it been a smooth road?
No road worth taking has ever been a smooth one in my experience, and this has been no exception. Besides the initial craziness that comes with getting any small business up and running, it was just the beginning. Creating and maintaining a team of like-minded artists has been a challenge at times, but I have also made some deep life-long connections along the way. I will also say in this day and age, dealing with clients in a strong social media and yelp world, has completely changed our industry. The unrealistic expectations and entitlement we see baffles us, but that being said due to the energy we create for our space we really attract some amazing clients, and the majority of our experiences have been rewarding ones.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wicked Hair & Make-up Artistry – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In 2012, Wicked Hair & Make-up Artistry became a reality. I wanted to create a safe space where our clients felt empowered to honor themselves and their beauty in a positive light, with mindful products and practices. We’re committed to approaching our clients with positive energy, and only using and supporting products and companies that are non-toxic & cruelty-free. We specialize in everyday beauty services, as well as special day services for weddings, photo shoots and everything in between.

Why is there so much negativity surrounding the “health & beauty” industry, I’m exhausted by the tearful stories of past experiences from both clients and artists. I’m so proud to say we’re creating karmic change everyday one client at a time.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I specifically choose Venice Beach for our studio’s home base, for its creative and vibrant artistic energy. My family also has a long history of owning businesses on my street, and I love honoring that. I have never experienced a more amazing and eclectic clientele in my whole career. Being that we do travel out for onsite work all over Los Angeles as well, it’s fun to discover all the different worlds that are here, unfortunately, because of our amazing city and the opportunities it holds we are so over populated that it makes traveling around a bit difficult, as well as the amount of options you have for any type of business are endless and makes things competitive.
