Today we’d like to introduce you to Carissa Woo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I attended University of Ca Riverside and graduated with an Economic Degree. I worked at an Apple campus Rep in college and The Apple Store straight out of college. After watching the movie “What Women Want” with Mel Gibson, I knew I wanted to work at an advertising agency. It looked cool. There was an advertising agency in Torrance and their big client was Toyota. I found someone that worked there and she got my foot in the door and I became a billing coordinator and then assistant media planner. Life was good but then the economy tanked in 2009 and I was being worked to the bone and I was unhappy. I quit my job to explore what was out there.
I started a custom frame company with my dad called Name That Frame. I made custom frames for holidays, birthdays, sports teams, you name it. I even made a frame for weddings and a lady that put on brides shows found me on the internet. She asked me if I wanted to sell my frames at a bride show. That is how I got introduced to the wedding industry.
Quickly, I ended the frame company and started my wedding photography business. This was 7 years ago. The popular wedding blogs were just starting the industry was really taking off. I bought a camera, used the bridal show email list I had and booked my first wedding. I did a bunch of bridal shows and I booked 50 weddings my 1st year. It was overwhelming and a lot of work but I was driven and hungry. I knew right away that I found my passion and that I would never look back.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over all, I would say, it’s been a smooth road and uphill climb but being an entrepreneur always has its ups and downs. You have to wear many hats and stand out in the competitive market. You also have to know your market very well and know what they want.
It’s all a learning experience but these are some of the things you will learn: client communication, editing, workflow, managing expectations, branding, marketing, social media, posing, delegating, outsourcing, pricing, work life balance, and networking.
If you are passionate enough about your craft, you will do well. There are a ton of great resources out there and it’s up to you with what you want to do with that. Sky is the limit in the industry and everyone is pretty good about helping each other, it’s an amazing industry and community.
Please tell us about Carissa Woo Photography.
My company is Carissa Woo Photography and my team and I specialized in creative, romantic and colorful weddings. I don’t limit myself to one type of wedding. I shoot garden whimsical weddings, urban downtown LA weddings, upscale hotel weddings, weddings at the beach. My couples are truly madly deeply in love and they come to me because they love the vibe they see on the blog. My photos have great light, color and have genuine emotion. My couples are stylish and they love details and variety.
I am very proud of the clients I attract. They love to have fun and “in love with love” just like me. My photos pop and I tell a comprehensive story with all my weddings. I love it when I get inquiries and they say they looked at over 100 wedding photographer’s websites and mine stands out amongst all of them.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have been more intentional about what vendors I worked with from the beginning. I didn’t really care who I worked with but it’s very important to build your community from the very start. If you build a solid community, you don’t have to spend money on advertising. Building strong relationships is key and your community will be with you for your whole career. You will build each other up and grow together.
