Today we’d like to introduce you to Carina.
Carina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I found the passion of baking about eight years ago when I first discovered DC Cupcakes, Cupcake Wars and Cake Boss on TV, that is when I told myself THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO!
Their energy and making people happy with sweets made me love it even more. Betty Crocker became my best friend, I started making cupcakes, cookies and enjoyed every second of it and I wanted to start sharing my desserts with everyone.
Around that time, I was going through a dark place in my life, it took over my happiness and energy to continue with baking, and I was only focusing on the negativity. My life changed when I met my husband at the end of 2011, till this day I tell myself my husband and son saved my life. He didn’t know what I was going through and feeling till a couple of months after we had our son. He advised me to reach out for professional help but I refused because I was afraid what others might think. He stood by my side and helped me with anything he could and courage me to start doing something that made me happy, and one of the things that came to mind was baking!
I started doing my own research and read a lot about the science behind baking and the fundamental skills necessary to become a successful home baker. I spent lots of time in the kitchen baking and creating cupcakes and as time went by I finally made my cupcake recipes that I’m proud of. Next thing I know, I discovered Rosanna Pansino on Youtube and fell in love with everything about her.
After that, I got motivated to start practicing custom chocolate covered confections, and I also wanted to start my own “How to” Youtube videos sharing my trail and errors. I bought all the equipment for it but still haven’t started, that’s still on pause. I wanted to start my own business and pursue my passion, but I kept making excuses on why I shouldn’t. I thought I didn’t have the time, didn’t want to spend money, or was afraid of what others might think or say. My husband & the rest of my family encouraged me to just go for it and make my dreams a reality.
January 2018, I started Alain’s Goodies (Alain is my son’s and husband’s middle name) and created an Instagram page, and from there it’s been an incredible ride. I received my business license Sept 2018. I’m extremely grateful and bless meeting wonderful people in the baking community that I look up to. I also been taking online classes to expand my knowledge and to keep learning.
Even though I know how to make something, I still take classes to learn tips and tricks from other talented bakers, because you always learn something new. I am very happy how this year has been going, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I still struggle with what I was going through, but I know my family will always be there supporting me and lifting me up while in this journey,
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road for sure. I still have a full-time job, my family and I enjoy working out, finding a balance is hard but it can be achieved. Being a self-taught baker, you really have to do your own research about everything that has to do with baking. Baking is definitely science.
It’s not cooking where you can add a pinch of this and that; everything has to be precise that’s why I like weighing my ingredients. There are times that my cupcakes don’t come out right and it’s frustrating because it’s my same recipe that I always make. I’ve cried, and have been stressed out with sometimes taking more orders than I should. I don’t like saying no, but I’ve learned that I need to, so my work will be great.
One weekend in the summer I had two big orders, and it was HOT (working with chocolate in the heat is no joke!), and I was finally done with the 1st order, and I messaged the customer that the order was ready and they said they were on their way. I was happy that I finished the 1st order and was able to finish my 2nd order on time.
Then when I was carrying my 24 cupcake box, the box handles broke off, and ALL the cupcakes fell on the floor. I had to message the customer right away about what happened, and I had to bake all the cupcakes all over again. It was stressful for sure. I was glad that the customer understood and was able to still pick up the cupcakes in time for the party.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Alain’s Goodies story. Tell us more about the business.
Alain’s Goodies is a family-oriented business. I’m a go-getter and a passionate entrepreneur. I customize cupcakes, cake pops, caramel apples and chocolate covered confections to your liking. I offer freshly made sweet goodies for every occasion and use the finest quality ingredients.
I’m best known for my Churro and Chocolate Chip Cookie Crust Cupcake, Buttercream frosting, and Cake Pops. All my cupcakes are made from scratch and only offer buttercream frosting (it’s delicious!)
I’m very proud when customers tell me how much they love my treats; my heart gets filled with joy. All I can do is be myself and enjoy every second of this journey, and keep creating cupcakes with my own twist.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My goal is to one day open a cupcake shop, and will also offer other delicious treats. I want a place where people can come in, relax and enjoy sweets with some alcoholic beverages and coffee.
Instead of Candyland, it’ll be a CupCake Land. I want my place to be a joyful environment. I have so many ideas in mind, and it’s just a matter of working hard & staying true to yourself.
At this moment, everyone can find me at vendor events, where you enjoy yourself and support small business owners. You can find my next event on my Instagram page.
