Meet Candase and Ashleigh Chambers of Bay Belle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candase and Ashleigh Chambers.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are proud Bay Area natives and graduates of the University of California, Berkeley with professional backgrounds in television, marketing, editorial writing and digital media. After college, we noticed it was hard to find the balance between doing what we love and feeling fulfilled in our careers while being able to express our creativity and be our authentic selves.

As women, most times it’s hard to find fashionable, high-quality clothing at affordable prices. From Oakland, our personal style is influenced from the culturally diverse Bay Area, hence the name Bay Belle, translated to Bay Area beauty. That’s why we decided to create Bay Belle, a fashion-forward, sexy and affordable collection for women.

We want women to know that being sexy is so much more than what you’re wearing, it’s an attitude and that’s what Bay Belle is all about, inspiring everyday women to feel sexy by feeling confident! It’s also important to us as entrepreneurs of color to convey that while we are business savvy we still can incorporate our urban style and continue to encourage and support other black-owned businesses as we grow.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While a lot of people may say the hardest part of being an entrepreneur is getting started, we would have to disagree. We believe anyone can start but not everyone can finish.

Consistency and endurance during the rough patches have been the hardest part of our journey. Creating Bay Belle has been a learning experience with new challenges that arise as we continue to grow. What has helped us through those challenges is that we both bring our unique skills and talents to make this work. Candase has a strong digital media background, so we were able to get up and running with our website and social media platforms in no time. Ashley has experience in business operations, so we are able to keep our business organized as we grow. But, getting eyes on our merchandise was another struggle. We grew our customer base and following from the ground up and are still working to reach new audiences every day.

We still work full-time jobs because Bay Belle is funded through our personal income, which means that each collection we release was hand-picked by us. We source our own merchandise and make a huge effort to shoot our collections in a way that represents our brand. Bay Belle is for the woman with curves who wants to stand out and not fit in. The challenges we face are really holding ourselves accountable to continue to represent the curvy woman, the outgoing woman and making sure that when we are buying, we have our Bay Belle Babe in mind. This can often mean pushing back release dates because we need to get our collections just right.

Funding can also be a challenge when we want to increase our inventory but are limited in purchasing because Bay Belle is run by our income from our day jobs. What keeps us going are our committed #BayBelleBabes who continue to shop with us and look forward to every collection. We do it for them because we know there are women out there, just like us who refuse to be status quo and are nothing less than fabulous.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bay Belle – what should we know?
Bay Belle is an online boutique for the stylish, sexy & confident woman. We specialize in special occasion pieces that are unique, fashion-forward, and most importantly affordable. We are known for being the go-to boutique when you want an eye-catching and memorable look for your special occasion, including birthdays, girls night, date night or when you just want to step it up, slay, and turn heads.

As a company, we are most proud of inspiring everyday women to feel sexy by feeling confident, especially when they’re wearing Bay Belle! We’re so proud to be celebrating 3 years of keeping our #BayBelleBabes fresh. What sets us apart from other boutiques are our over-the-top styles that not only look good on but bring out a newfound confidence and empower the women wearing our styles.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We can’t thank our #BayBelleBabes enough! Your support through social media, sales, sharing our brand and your one-of-a-kind spirit motivates us to continue getting better everyday and bringing you looks that you love. We wouldn’t be celebrating three years of business without all of you!

And yes many people start working towards their dreams but only those that endure the journey reach them. I was moved by your story so I’m about to have a Bay Belle shopping experience.
