Meet Camille Janae of Mahogany and Rose Hair Studio in Sacramento

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Janae.

Camille, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I discovered my interest in doing hair while in college when I started braiding hair in my dorm room as a side hustle. I later decided to pursue a career in hair and earned my cosmetology license in 2017. I always knew I wanted to specialize in curly hair because I saw that it was a need and I wanted to offer services I didn’t see other salons offering. Upon graduating from cosmetology school, I started working as an educator for a major curly hair product brand which helped me jump into my specialty of serving clients with curly hair. I could not find a salon in my area that offered the services I wanted to the clients I wanted to serve while holding the same values about using products with cleaner ingredients. So I opened my own salon in 2018, specializing exclusively in curly haircuts and loc maintenance. I am also an independent educator, teaching classes to stylists and salon teams that want to learn how to cut and style curly hair. I plan to expand my salon in the next year or two to serve more clients and amplify other talented stylists who specialize in curly hair.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Cosmetology school was a struggle because I was working full time five days a week while going to classes in the evening until 10pm, five days a week. And one day a week, I would still braid hair on the side. I was tired most of the time and skipped a lot of fun activities because I was focused on finishing and getting my license.

It was also challenging for me to find my place in the industry when there weren’t and still aren’t very many stylists who specialize only in curly hair. There wasn’t really anyone in my area I could look up to, so I tried to find inspiration from stylists online in other areas and create my own path for what I wanted my career to look like.

I am now working on creating and maintaining boundaries between my work and personal life in a world that so easily attaches your value to your career.
