Meet Camila Casanas of Camila Creates in Greater Los Angeles Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Casanas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Camila. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, my father was a doctor who practiced integrative internal medicine, so being around healing and wellness was an innate part of my life. I sort of unconsciously began following in his footsteps. After studying social and behavioral science in college, my life took an unexpected turn as I started gaining interest in becoming a chef. I hit the ground running, working in some of San Francisco’s top 100 restaurants before moving to Los Angeles. Restaurant life is both thankless and brutal, which in a way is sort of what inspired my passion for tending to my mental and physical health more intentionally.

After moving to Hollywood and working for an integrative Holistic Nutritionist, and doing formulations for wellness companies, I noticed that Los Angeles has an obsession with health and wellness, but in a way that tends to focus on the individual rather than the collective healing. It also caters to a very narrow demographic, and frankly, those dynamics really miss the mark for me. Through those experiences though, I became committed to decolonizing wellness and taking a more diverse and holistic approach to healing. To expand my knowledge of how the health of our environment directly dictates the spiritual, physical, and emotional well being of all beings, I started an herbalist apprenticeship at The Gaia School of Healing. Deepening my relationship with the plants, and the lands as modalities for healing has brought my offerings full circle. I work now as an integrative wellness practitioner, herbalist, and private chef, incorporating all of those elements into multi-faceted nourishment for my clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been the windiest, up and down, roller coaster. Paving your own path as an entrepreneur is a journey that can often be riddled with self-doubt, criticism, questionable opinions, financial risk, and sometimes and overall just feeling extremely insecure.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Camila Creates – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is called Camila Creates. And this is true, I create many many things – all of which orbit around wellness. I’m a holistic private chef and caterer, herbalist, gardener, reiki practitioner and curator/producer of workshops, events, dinner parties, and leader of plant medicine and tea ceremonies. I’m known for unapologetically clearing my own path to achieve my success on my own terms, whilst educating people in the process. I’m most proud of the mold-breaking approach that I have taken on in the wellness world, which has otherwise been reserved for groups of people that have money and therefore immediate access.

But health and wellness is truly for ALL people, of all colors, economic backgrounds, (non) genders, or body types. I think at this time in our society it is absolutely vital that we weave intersectionality and diversity into all conversations around healing, health, and wellness. It takes a lot of courage to shatter mainstream conversations in the wellness industry, but I know my true calling is to do just that and remind folks of the critical importance of inclusiveness and accessibility. This is what most obviously sets me apart from my peers in the industry as it exists right now.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to continue being a humble student of the land. Attuning myself to the rhythms of the seasons and nature acts as a great compass for just following my heart wherever it is leading me! This means continuing to deepen my knowledge of holistic wellness and plant medicine and learning to be a better tender of our planet through regenerative and sustainable practices. I will be back and forth between Los angeles, Hawaii, San Francisco and New York for work during the foreseeable future. I’m looking forward to working on new creative projects; writing a cookbook, producing wellness events and full experience dinner parties, and connecting with community to create ways that we can continue to thrive sustaining our livelihood through our art/mediums.
