Meet Rachael Moton, Lauren Meyering, and Mackenzie Breeden of Calm Down LLC in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Moton, Lauren Meyering, and Mackenzie Breeden.

Back in the fall of 2018, Lauren Meyering and Mackenzie Breeden began developing a feature film. They approached their friend and collaborator, Rachael Moton, with the idea and she began assisting them with the project. In January 2019, the trio attended Sundance Film Festival where they had the opportunity to pitch the concept to a few different execs.

With great feedback and additional support, the women decided to focus on producing their concept independently. They decided to open up to the world their story of the triumphs and failures that come along with being indie filmmakers. Inspired by naysayers that told them to “calm down” – the women formed Calm Down LLC. Calm Down LLC focuses on creating instructional videos, vlogs, and other content to show indie filmmakers how to make their own projects. Additionally, Calm Down also brings subscribers behind the scenes on their journey as they follow their dreams.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for us. From the beginning, we knew that making a feature film isn’t easy. What sets us apart from other popular indie filmmakers is that we’re very transparent about the struggles we’ve faced. A lot of industry people claim that filmmakers should just “go out and make their movie” – but we at Calm Down understand that this isn’t realistic and that there’s a lot more that goes into this.

Our number one struggle has been the financial difficulties of everything that goes into film development – travel, legal fees, and simply just financing our lives. We all work various odd jobs to pay the bills on top of financing our film. Being a filmmaker does come with a level of financial privilege that we believe it’s important to acknowledge. Thankfully, we’ve had support from family, friends, our Patreon patrons, and have applied for a ton of grants!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Currently, Calm Down LLC is solely focused on producing our own feature film. Outside of this, Lauren, Rachael, and Mack all work professionally in art and entertainment. Mack is a photographer, actor, and model. Lauren is a director, writer, and producer. Rachael is a director, writer, and film educator. Together, the three of us all work together to producer Calm Down’s content.

We’re honestly proudest of how Calm Down has inspired so many people. What started as just a way for the three of us to share our own journey has helped so many other people. Every day, we wake up to messages from people around the world that have been impacted by the content we make and tell us it’s inspired them to make their own films. Even though our community is small now, the impact that we’ve made on other people is so powerful. We’re so excited to bring so many other creatives along on our journey.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Even though LA is arguably the most film-centric city in the world, we acknowledge that it’s not realistic for every filmmaker to just move here. Living in LA is hard and it’s just impossible for every aspiring filmmaker to afford to make the move. We recommend that anyone who wants to make their own film moves at their own pace and lives where they feel is most viable to them. Of course, living in LA has its perks but it’s possible to create movies anywhere – don’t feel like you can’t pursue your dreams elsewhere.
