Meet Calipso Aranda, Radio Host, Producer and Speaker in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calipso Aranda.

Calipso, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am an on-air radio personality for Dash Radio on FUEGO and a Producer for iHeart Media I started in radio more than 11 yrs ago started from the bottom to work my way up to on-air and hosted Morning drive, then did News, Traffic, Weather & Entertainment News. Now, I host my own shows On Saturday’s live 1-4pm a Latin Urban Format, and during the week, I produce two shows, Midday’s for 102.7 KIIS FM & The Community Council on 4 other Well known LA FM Stations. I am a full-time single mother with no days off, sometimes for a whole month, my kids keep me motivated always. I am also a voice over actress and I serve my community in the Los Angeles area all the time.  I also speak at schools about my career to also teach and lecture at The Broadcasting School I graduated from, once a week. I also film and direct my own short mini films that come with an inspirational message especially about being a single parent.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, the road has been far from smooth. It’s a blessing and a curse all at once, I felt always very overseen and overcast as the competition here in LA for a bold Latina is always competitive, being on-air is never stable, one minute your talking to thousands of people on the radio each day and the next, they take you out cause the music changes and go back to square one. I have done that so many times, but I am not afraid to start all over again. At the end of the day, I want to motivate listeners or viewers smile at least for a couple days, I feel like my purpose is to inform, inspire and entertain and a microphone is the perfect weapon of choice.

Please tell us about being a Radio Host/Producer/Speaker.
I am a radio host and also I produce some shows when I am on-air, I have to make sure I know exactly what I am talking about. I have to keep up with the latest current news on pop-culture as well as music, local and world news, anything trending, my energy has to be up always, I cannot have a bad day and if I do, I have to leave it out the door. I am most proud of all the great moments I share with listeners, sometimes, they call the hotline just to talk to someone or share a great feeling to a not so great feeling. One time, I had a listener call me and he wanted to commit suicide cause his girlfriend left him and I stayed with him on the phone for hours while still running my live show and trying to find him some help and I did call one of the numbers I gave him. A few months did pass by and he called again he was in better spirits, I was glad to hear he was alive and not wanting to harm himself but to live with a purpose. What sets me apart from others is that I appreciate the little things that I have my position is very competitive people lose themselves a lot and it gets to their heads. I remain humble a lot at least that’s what many people tell me.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Yes, I would have done this much earlier in my years. I started this career in my late twenties with a brand new baby and left a very toxic marriage. I got myself back in school and worked a full-time job, with full-time school hours to being a mom. I wish I would have started sooner.
