Meet CaliNovas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taron Eliazaryan and Ken Arutyunyan.

Taron and Ken, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started out producing hip hop for a local artist and mainly working on an album project for Nazo Bravo. Then in 2012 we branched out into the electronic music scene mainly because of the culture and great positive vibes of the music. We landed a residency at Bagatelle in West Hollywood which opened up a few big doors including Create Nightclub (now known as Academy), Neon Paint Tour, the We Love Candy Tour, and most recently a residency at the famous Avalon Hollywood.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning I (Taron) was more focused on production and audio engineering and basically the technical side of music but when Ken landed us our first big gig at Bagatelle, we literally had to learn some of the basics that go into a live DJ set. So, we rented the necessary equipment from guitar center a couple of nights before the gig and taught ourselves how to actually do it… It was one of the most scary and exciting feelings to be thrown out of your comfort zone that quickly. Fortunately, the show went really well and everyone was very pleased which led to the residency there and many more opportunities.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
I think what sets us apart is our great friendship and dynamic on stage. I’m (Taron) usually pretty focused on the music and mixes during the DJ sets and (Ken) is the more energetic and engaging with the crowd. I feel like we’ve fine tuned this DJ duo dynamic to where we can both thrive at our strengths. We feel like both aspects are necessary for a successful and memorable show.

Also, we have a monthly podcast on iTunes (Calinovas Radio Show) that features a DJ mix of the newest releases of Bass House, Electro House, Future House and Dance tracks of that particular month. This has been going strong for over six years now and it’s become a vital part of brand… The music is always fresh!

What were you like growing up?
Ken: As a kid I was active, loud, and talkative. I made friends easily with many different groups of people. I was a natural at networking.

Taron: I was always the more calculated and somewhat quiet kid. I like to let my work speak for itself.

We both played sports and loved music. That’s what brought us together when we met about 20 years ago. We still play basketball in adult leagues so not much has really changed since.
