Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlyn Rylander.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Caitlyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to Ventura from Los Angeles in February 2013 after six years of being an executive assistant to a celebrity hairstylist. I found a little salon in Ventura and started doing small flower arrangements from small roadside stands and farmers markets for my station. The salon owner disapproved of them there so I started putting them at the front desk. It quickly turned into doing tabletops at restaurants and office parties. That December the salon owner and I split ways and I found my now studio by the new year.
I opened doors at Fleur de Rye (77 S California St. Ventura, CA) February 12th, 2014 as a floral and hairstyling creative studio to blend my two loves at 25 years old. I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea opening on basically the eve of Valentine’s Day, but the rush was one of the most insane days of that first year. I joked that it set me up for the wedding’s that I took on which usually keep me busy 35 weekends out of the year.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every day can hold a fun new learning experience. There’s always a new facet of the business I come across as a one woman show. The hardest road has been building my website and all that comes with it. I sometimes call myself the worst millennial because I missed the tech bloom not going to college. Thank goodness for youtube.
Fleur de Rye – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In the last 5 1/2 years, the business model has stayed pretty fluid, but heavily weighted on the floral side of things. I usually do hair on Mondays, but am doing a slow retirement at the end of the year. I found a special place in the market for floral headpieces. Weddings continue to be a huge part of my life and I have added a web-store to the mix for customizers to buy 100% customizable to order arrangements, bouquets, and headpieces for next day delivery/pick up as I am the only specialty wedding florist with a retail storefront.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is constantly being inspired and happy with the work that I am doing. My old boss in LA instilled the old field of dreams motto of “if you build it, they will come” which I love. I constantly try new things, new ingredients, new methods and I have built the most lovely of clientele who love and believe in the work I do for them. I love the shop more and more everyday because of it.
