Today we’d like to introduce you to Tawny Cohen.
Tawny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I was three years old. That’s when I started my passion/career in dance. Growing up, I danced at multiple competitive studios and learned from many amazing teachers. I learned many styles of dance but my all-time favorite was hip hop! I loved everything about dance and knew that this is what I was meant to do.
After I graduated high school, I went right into teaching hip hop to all ages. While I was teaching, I was still focusing on myself as a dancer. I was on a couple of hip hop crews and was taking class here and there out in LA.
With living in Rancho Cucamonga, I wasn’t taking as many classes as I wanted to so I figured hey why not start something out here where I live. I had been working on a brand for myself for a while and once I knew exactly what it was and the logo it was time to start showcasing it. That is when C.R.O.W.N.D came alive.
What is C.R.O.W.N.D? It stands for Confident. Rare. Original. Worthy. Noble. Determined. All these words are something I stand for. Not just when it comes to dance but with everyday life. My logo is a drawing of me that one of my friends (Faith) drew for me. C.R.O.W.N.D was created in 2016 but made its first debut in Jan 2017. That first debut was amazing because not only was it the day I released my brand but it was also the first time I put a full set together to perform at a night club. It was a great way to get my name, my brand and my love for dance out to the world.
Now every time I perform, you will see me and the crew reppin C.R.O.W.N.D. It’s not just a brand but a lifestyle. I recently asked my best friend Juanita Elias to be the co-founder and of course she said yes. We are working right now on some new merchandise but also working on setting up workshops and more performances to come!
I do want to take a quick second and thank everyone that has been supporting me since day one. You all push me and motivate me to do bigger and better things. Love you guys!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like everything in the world, you are going to have your ups and downs. I had my days where I would second guess myself and think, am I doing the right thing? Is what I’m doing going to be a success?…but then I remember that nothing comes easy. I was going to have to work my butt off and I was prepared for that. I made sure to keep a positive attitude and keep pushing forward. There was nothing that was going to come my way that I couldn’t handle.
C.R.O.W.N.D – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the creator of the brand C.R.O.W.N.D. it is an acronym of words that I represent. When it comes to dance I go by Queen T and I would make the hand gesture of a crown on my head. I always loved the word crown but was thinking of a way to add my own twist to it. That’s when it hit me… I should take one of my favorite words and make it an acronym of some of the words I as a person represent. When I finished putting all the words together, I knew that yes it was what I’m about but I know a lot of other people who would describe themselves the same way. I knew that C.R.O.W.N.D was not just a brand but it was a way of life. It’s a way of describing yourself with a positive attitude. Confident. Rare. Original. Worthy. Noble. Determined.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is not about how much money you make. Money is a great thing but success is being truly happy with what you are doing in life. To me there is no end to success because there is always room for growth. I try and find a way to grow as a dancer, a choreographer, a person and ways to help others around me. If I want to grow and see change I have to make the change within myself. I try to be the best version of me that there is and hope to keep succeeding and help others succeed as well.
