Today we’d like to introduce you to Byron Quiros.
Byron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While I was shy and insecure as I child, I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a violent neighborhood in a broken home with divorced parents. At the age of eleven, I took on the father-figure role given I was the oldest. That role came way too early for me. But I took it on with a fierce focus despite having no real-life experience as a “man.”
When I was 19, I won the title of Mr. Costa Rica. This immediately immersed me deeper into my Latin community making me realize how important it was and is to become a role model for younger kids, especially those with backgrounds similar to mine.
This is also how I fell in love with acting. I was constantly losing myself in imaginary circumstances just to survive and escape my reality. This dark period of my upbringing was my first “self-taught” acting class, and it has since been at the center of my craft. I have used my childhood experience to fuel all of the characters I’ve portrayed on film, TV, and stage.
I didn’t learn ballet until I was in college. The chair of the dance department saw my potential and offered me classical training in exchange for lifting ballerinas in advanced partner choreography. Ballet completely changed my body and how I move. It gave me a stronger core, made my muscles longer and leaner, and strengthened my body and mind. I began training clients and teaching dance-fitness classes with a balletic approach.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took me many years to develop Red Relevé and find the right balance of workout and sensuality. It has been difficult at times to find the right audience and location for the class, as well as making the class accessible and welcoming to all levels and bodies.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
When I’m not on set working as an actor, I am motivating, guiding, and helping others live their fullest potential! I do this through dance, fitness, and my one-on-one intuitive healing sessions.
What sets me apart is a passion to help someone achieve their absolute best. My real life experience and childhood traumas give me a higher level of empathy and intuition so that I can help others. I come from a long line of healers and can feel energetically where someone is coming from and what they need to move forward. Dance is also a powerful mode of healing for myself and my clients.
An energetic force of movement that is liberating, restorative, and expressive. Dance gave me a voice and freedom from my past trauma and is at the root of my signature dance fitness class, Red Relevé. This not only involves ballet training but also Burlesque and Latin movements, which to me represents finding one’s personal strength and sensuality. I find that many people do not know how to express that without society judging them.
Red Relevé was inspired by my female hip-hop students who wanted a platform and a safe space to express themselves with freedom and without judgment… a class that would allow them to get in touch with their sensual sides.
Red Relevé began as more of a dance-cardio class with sexy, sensual movement; students had fun and a good sweat. When inexperienced dancers wanted to take the class, too, I began to experiment with how I could make it more accessible, break it down, and introduce repetitive movement for the non-dancer as well. When I added classical ballet conditioning the format and tone of Red Relevé came together to make it what it is today.
Red Relevé is different from other dance-based workouts in that it has a very structured format, but also space to break structure and express emotion through movement. It appeals to those who want a repetitive workout format that doesn’t require too much choreography and those who come for the fun, sensual, sexy freedom of dance.
Many other workouts talk about being sexy, but Red Relevé allows you to move in a sensual, expressive way while you’re shaping your booty! In my public and private classes and in my healing sessions, I strive to help clients unite their minds, bodies, and spirits.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I credit hard work and preparation for most of the success in my life and business, but luck has connected me at times in the right moments to the right people to get me further along my path.
