Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Jablon.
Jaclyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been infatuated with makeup, but it all started about 7 years ago when I really started learning more about the special effects aspect of it. I enrolled in Makeup Designory shortly after and have been in the industry ever since. I started off doing makeup for friends and family, then on music videos, student films, and finally landed a tv show after building my portfolio. I eventually ventured out to do weddings, parties, and photoshoots. However, the busiest time of the year for me is always Halloween! Everyone always comes to me for prosthetics and bloodwork, so I constantly have back-to-back appointments.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing comes easy! As a freelance artist, people always try to take advantage of us and expect us to work for free or little money. I learned early on to stand my ground. A good makeup artist is worth every penny. 🙂 The only other struggle I would say is getting steady work. Word of mouth is key.
Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
There have been many times in my career that I have wanted to quit! It is not easy out here on your own, especially with all the talented competition and growing Instagram makeup icons teaching tutorials. I just had to keep pushing, keep looking and keep practicing techniques. Everything eventually falls into place.
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
My advice to new artists would be to take any gig you can and build your portfolio as much as possible. Don’t be too prideful and realize you will have to start from the bottom as the key makeup artists assistant; sometimes not getting paid. But that is okay! Take it as a learning experience and make as many connections as possible. Someone will eventually recognize your worth and value. Keep your head up!
What are you most excited about these days?
I am in the works of launching a creative partnership with my best friend – makeup, photography, set design, styling and even painting portraits of the shoots we do. We are very excited! We are trying to cover all realms whether it’s beauty, engagement, maternity etc. Should be a fun and interesting journey for us and we cannot wait for it to take off.
