Today we’d like to introduce you to Buddy Norton and Shelby Lowe.
Buddy and Shelby, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Buddy- “I worked at a typical modern-day sign shop doing primarily vinyl and digital signs. I wasn’t particularly fond of the work but, was always interested in learning more about hand-painted signs. There was a gentleman in town, Sean Beauchamp, that was from the Letterhead movement who heard I was interested in learning about sign painting. He reached out and invited me to come down to his shop weekly and taught me the basics of sign painting and gold leaf signs. I am forever grateful to him and what he taught me. From there, I started doing more hand-painted signs on my own and eventually broke off from the sign shop I had been working at. At that point, Shelby had started helping me on larger wall jobs and from there learned how to paint and guild.
We both had a dream of traveling and painting together. So, Shelby quit her job and we bought and built out our first van, and hit the road! That was the start of Canned Pineapple. We’ve now been traveling and painting all across the country for the last three years. Going as far as Maryland, Alaska and have even had the opportunity to paint in South Africa. Our home base is San Luis Obispo where we spend about half the year (primarily in the winter) working. It’s been such an incredible journey and we feel very fortunate to be able to live an unconventional life that is so fulfilling.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If the road had been smooth I think we would have felt like we were doing something wrong. We feel like the greater the struggle the greater the reward. That would be the perfect way to describe our journey. As great of an adventure it has been, it has also been equally difficult. Before we had a large body of work it was challenging finding clients who trusted us to do a good enough job. We also had to educate people on the value of what hand-painted/gold leaf signs can do for your space. Currently, our biggest challenge is scheduling and the logistics of everything since we’re always on the move.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Canned Pineapple Co. story. Tell us more about it.
We specialize in hand-painted signs, murals, and gold leaf work. We’re most proud of the relationships we’ve built with the people that have trusted us to make their businesses stand out. What we hope sets us apart is the originality of our designs and our ability to travel coast-to-coast.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that depends on how you define luck. We see luck more as opportunities combined with hard work. We’ve tried to always put ourselves in positions to create opportunities and some pretty lucky shit has happened!
