Meet Bryan Stone of Stone Harbor Media Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Stone.

Please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story is a unique one. It was around 23 years ago that I started selling candy at the local swim meets outside the actual swim meet competing with the snack bar inside. I remember all the kids would come by and purchase my candy not only because it was better and cheaper but they didn’t have to wait in line. The inside snack bar tried to shut me down but how could they shut down a kid just selling candy?! That was when I got my entrepreneurial itch at a young age. As time went on, I knew I wanted to start my own business of some sort but didn’t know what. I come from an entrepreneurial family so it was in my blood.

Fast forward, I went to school in LA, graduating with three degrees being marketing as my favorite. While going to school, I worked my way through various jobs in the action sports industry. I started my career in the action sports industry as a graphic designer for a local sunglass company. I eventually left that job and started as a product manager in the corporate action sports world. This was exactly what I wanted to do, living and breathing the lifestyle I worked in. While building my career in the industry, I started doing graphic design on the side as well as some video. As my full-time job demanded a lot of my time, my side gig was put on the back burner. I eventually left my corporate job and found another one, this time at Quiksilver where it was one of my dream companies to work at. I couldn’t have been more happy working there in the IT department from the culture to the people I worked with. I enjoyed every minute of it. At the time, Quiksilver was going through some tough times financially and it really started to wear on me as an employee whether I’d be laid off or move to another department.

I eventually left my Quiksilver job and decided that I was either going to start my own business or look for another corporate gig. My buddy contacted me a couple weeks later and needed someone to oversee their marketing and IT, so I thought why not, it’s right up my alley. Needless to say, I dove head first right into it as a consultant and haven’t looked back. Simultaneously, I started my own media business, utilizing storytelling and design through various mediums like short films, photography (including aerial) and marketing collateral. Providing the complete package for real estate and construction firms. Video and photography have always been a creative interest for me and thought why not a better time than now to incorporate these services into the business. We are three years in and haven’t looked back since!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting your own business coming from a steady job of the corporate world is not easy. There are so many pieces to the puzzle and every day you are juggling all those pieces. You are taught all these aspects in school but until you are physically in the trenches, you don’t really know. Coming from a different industry, there’s been some mistakes and challenges along the way that you don’t plan for. I’m still learning new things each and every day both on the creative side and business side.

Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
We are Stone Harbor Media Group. We were born from the love of creating stories for clients. Being a digital media company allows us to work with a vast number of clients across different industries. That so happens to be real estate and construction industries in the Orange and Los Angeles counties. Don’t think that’s who we only work with, Stone Harbor also collaborates with various startups and established companies that are in need of digital media services to get their brand noticed in the crowded marketplace. On the contrary, there is a need to assist both realtors, brokers, and boutique construction firms in ways that allows them to focus on their business while allowing us to execute their digital marketing needs. Stone Harbor Media Group is built on an innovative concept; to incorporate as much technology and different forms of media into every project. Our specialty is capturing the moment through various lenses whether that’s photo, video, or drones. We’re most proud of as a company for creating unique stories for each client that incorporates all our different technologies. We wouldn’t be where we are 10 years ago if it wasn’t for the awesome innovative equipment we work with every day. There are lots of media companies in the SoCal area that do what we do but we take time to understand the needs of our clients and how we can turn that into a long-lasting relationship. Many other firms are a “one and done” approach and don’t necessarily establish the relationship and move onto the next big thing.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
The best part I have to say is the unlimited amount of creative talent that lives here and how you can tap into those resources. There is definitely so many opportunities to network. Without all the creative talent, I don’t think SHMG would be where it is today!
